Here are five tips to&nbsp;smoothly and successfully navigate your applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Start early<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Start your application early to take advantage of&nbsp;time. The earlier you start, the more time you&nbsp;have to&nbsp;research graduate programs, build a strong&nbsp;application&nbsp;and learn about the financial aid&nbsp;opportunities&nbsp;available to you.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good rule of thumb is to start your research around three to six months before each program\u2019s application deadline.&nbsp;Keep in mind that programs tend to start around six to&nbsp;12&nbsp;months after&nbsp;that.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate programs start at&nbsp;different times&nbsp;throughout the year. So, when you research, check the \u201cAdmissions\u201d section of each program\u2019s website for the most current application deadline information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Know your why<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong application should&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;your sense of purpose in&nbsp;that&nbsp;specific graduate program. Before you apply, reflect on your goals and ask yourself:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why this field?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why this university?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Write down your reflections to develop a mission statement that clearly sums up, in a few sentences, what your \u201cwhy\u201d is. Use those insights to shape your personal statements for each application.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gather materials strategically<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you start your application,&nbsp;it&#8217;s&nbsp;helpful to gather or&nbsp;request&nbsp;all the documents you need.&nbsp;You\u2019ll&nbsp;need your school transcripts,&nbsp;letters of recommendation, a resume or CV, test score reports (if&nbsp;required)&nbsp;and&nbsp;a personal statement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you ask for a letter of recommendation,&nbsp;look for a diverse set of recommenders who can speak to your skills, knowledge, motivation,&nbsp;leadership&nbsp;and other qualities valued by your graduate&nbsp;program.&nbsp;Make sure you give them plenty of time to&nbsp;write&nbsp;strong letters&nbsp;tailored to&nbsp;that&nbsp;program.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commit&nbsp;significant time&nbsp;to your personal statement\u2014keep your \u201cwhy\u201d in mind while you write.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;also important to&nbsp;have people you trust review each draft before you&nbsp;submit&nbsp;the&nbsp;final version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make your personal statement your own<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid generic language when you write your personal statement.&nbsp;If&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;applying to more than one program, tailor your statement for each one.
