You already know that, but&nbsp;students&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;always clear about&nbsp;<em>how&nbsp;<\/em>they affect your application.&nbsp;You may wonder,&nbsp;\u201cWhat activities are best for my application,\u201d or \u201cHow many should I have?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help you get your head around how&nbsp;your activities&nbsp;matter,&nbsp;University of the Pacific\u2019s admission&nbsp;counselors (the people who read your application) have some advice for you.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What counts as an extracurricular activity?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s&nbsp;common for students to focus on three types of activities: sports, service&nbsp;work&nbsp;and school clubs.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;great to be involved in&nbsp;those extracurriculars, but&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;not the only&nbsp;ones&nbsp;that universities consider meaningful.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When&nbsp;counselors review&nbsp;your application, your extracurriculars help&nbsp;them&nbsp;understand you\u2014&nbsp;your interests, your drive, your leadership&nbsp;capabilities&nbsp;and&nbsp;commitment.&nbsp;Activities&nbsp;are&nbsp;not&nbsp;just a box you need to check.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just really want to see what you\u2019re passionate about,\u201d says Senior Assistant Director of Admission Danny Ramirez Martinez. \u201cIs it&nbsp;athletics? Is it volunteer work? What interests&nbsp;do&nbsp;you&nbsp;have outside of academics? I just really want to know what kind of student you are, because I want to be sure that&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;going to be a perfect fit at Pacific.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, think about what you do each week. Even if you&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;in a sport,&nbsp;club&nbsp;or volunteer position, you&nbsp;probably still&nbsp;do something that helps a university understand you. You might have a job, take care of your&nbsp;siblings&nbsp;or play an instrument.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not consider those extracurriculars, but\u00a0each of those things can\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0commitment, the fact that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0trustworthy or that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0driven to learn new skills.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0what a university wants to learn about you.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0worthwhile inclusions on your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What extracurriculars do colleges like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You might think there are \u201cright\u201d extracurriculars that universities value more highly, but&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;not the case.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no right&nbsp;activity,\u201d&nbsp;says Assistant Director of Admission Emily De Herrera.&nbsp;\u201cIt depends on what&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;interested in, what&nbsp;your&nbsp;passions are.&nbsp;I want to see that&nbsp;you&nbsp;grew in this activity, that&nbsp;you&nbsp;showed leadership.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, a&nbsp;university wants to&nbsp;see quality engagement with your extracurriculars. That can look like long-term commitment, leadership&nbsp;roles&nbsp;or growth in responsibility over time.&nbsp;If the activity is a sport or musical instrument, you could also show achievement in competitions or shows.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a university sees that&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;really involved with an activity, it&nbsp;understands&nbsp;your story&nbsp;better. That&nbsp;helps it find you&nbsp;a place on campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes, students feel like they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have enough activities or that their activities\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0to the standards\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0looking for,\u201d\u00a0De\u00a0Herrera\u00a0says.\u201d \u201cBut we want to know things that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0part\u00a0of. And that gives us a big insight into who you are. That way, we can connect you better to our campus, get you club ideas or\u00a0different groups\u00a0that\u00a0you can join at Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many extracurriculars should I have for college?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like how there are no \u201cright\u201d extracurriculars, there is no \u201cright\u201d amount&nbsp;of them, either.&nbsp;You may see someone say online that you need&nbsp;to&nbsp;list&nbsp;six,&nbsp;eight or more extracurriculars on your application, but this&nbsp;advice misses the mark.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in&nbsp;mind,&nbsp;a university wants to see quality engagement with your activities.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;better to list a few extracurriculars that&nbsp;you do a lot than a whole bunch that&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;barely involved in.&nbsp;So, the \u201cright\u201d number of activities for&nbsp;<em>you<\/em>&nbsp;is how many you do meaningful work&nbsp;for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to talk about extracurriculars on your college application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you add extracurriculars to your application, there are a few ways you can show quality engagement:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The activity section:\u00a0<\/strong>When you list your activities, the application asks you for information about how long\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0done it, what you did and what leadership roles you held. This is a great chance to\u00a0show your depth of involvement.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The personal statement:\u00a0<\/strong>Your personal statement\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0need to be about your activities, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0OK\u00a0if your statement\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mention them.\u00a0But\u00a0it is an opportunity to weave\u00a0one in. For example,\u00a0if your statement addresses an accomplishment of yours, you could talk about how a new role with a club, job or internship led to\u00a0an outcome\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0really proud\u00a0of.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your\u00a0letters\u00a0of recommendation:<\/strong>\u00a0If one or more of your recommenders is\u00a0tied\u00a0to an extracurricular, their letter might give more information about your commitment or achievements there.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior&nbsp;Assistant Director of Admission Melanie Pio&nbsp;advises that you speak&nbsp;with a role model about your activities. They may highlight aspects of your work that you&nbsp;haven\u2019t&nbsp;thought about. She also says&nbsp;that you should focus on what you did, not what your extracurricular is about.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not looking for one sentence about what your activity might be,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re looking for in-depth details of what you\u2019ve done or relationships you\u2019ve&nbsp;built&nbsp;in your community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Little free time? How to shine anyway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;worried that you&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;have enough&nbsp;deep&nbsp;involvement with an extracurricular, take some time&nbsp;to think about what you do every week.&nbsp;Universities&nbsp;don&#8217;t&nbsp;just think of extracurriculars&nbsp;as&nbsp;formal, school-sponsored clubs.&nbsp;They\u2019re&nbsp;the parts of your life that show your commitment, interests,&nbsp;drive&nbsp;or&nbsp;responsibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven&nbsp;babysitting or&nbsp;helping with a family business, those&nbsp;count,\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Ramirez&nbsp;Martinez&nbsp;says. \u201cYou should definitely list that on your college application.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of what you do,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;part of your story and what makes you&nbsp;<em>you<\/em>.&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;what you want to show on your application.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Extracurricular&nbsp;activities make a difference&nbsp;in&nbsp;your college applications.
