While their exact duties may vary by industry, company&nbsp;size&nbsp;and workplace structure, their work usually centers on supporting employees and helping the organization meet its goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One major part of the role is&nbsp;<strong>recruiting and hiring<\/strong>. HR managers may help write job descriptions, post openings, review applications, coordinate&nbsp;interviews&nbsp;and support hiring decisions. Once a new employee joins the organization, HR often helps lead onboarding&nbsp;to make sure that person understands their role, workplace&nbsp;expectations&nbsp;and available resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR managers also support&nbsp;<strong>employee growth&nbsp;after hiring<\/strong>. That can include training, professional&nbsp;development&nbsp;and helping managers&nbsp;support their teams effectively. In some workplaces,&nbsp;they&nbsp;also oversee payroll and benefits administration, which may involve working with vendors and helping employees understand their options.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another key responsibility is supporting&nbsp;<strong>workplace culture and employee relations<\/strong>. HR managers may help create a productive work environment, plan employee engagement&nbsp;efforts&nbsp;and respond when conflicts or concerns arise.&nbsp;\u201cI think HR is the heartbeat of a company,\u201d&nbsp;said Lindsay Lovett, who graduated from&nbsp;Pacific&nbsp;in 2004 and has worked as a recruiter at Enterprise, Zoom and Meta.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR teams often play&nbsp;a central role&nbsp;in&nbsp;<strong>performance management<\/strong>, including reviews, promotions,&nbsp;raises&nbsp;and, in some cases, termination processes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond day-to-day employee support, HR managers also help shape the bigger picture.&nbsp;They may develop workplace policies, update employee&nbsp;handbooks&nbsp;and work with leadership to assess staffing and organizational needs. In that way, HR managers do&nbsp;not&nbsp;just respond to issues as they come&nbsp;up.&nbsp;They also help organizations&nbsp;plan&nbsp;ahead.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does an HR manager do on a daily basis?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no single routine for an HR manager. Daily responsibilities can vary depending on the size of the organization, the&nbsp;industry&nbsp;and the structure of the HR team.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood companies with a good HR process look to try to think of it from point A to retirement,\u201d said Chris Sablynski, associate professor of management&nbsp;in&nbsp;Pacific\u2019s Eberhardt School of Business.&nbsp;\u201cSo,&nbsp;an applicant to retirement,&nbsp;all&nbsp;the steps that are part of that are under the umbrella of human resource management.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In smaller organizations, HR managers may handle many of those responsibilities at once. In larger companies, the work is often divided among specialists who focus on areas such as recruiting, training,&nbsp;compensation&nbsp;or employee relations. Sablynski said that range gives students many&nbsp;possible paths&nbsp;within the field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical day in HR might include meeting with employees, reviewing hiring needs, helping managers solve problems, updating&nbsp;policies&nbsp;or supporting training and development. That variety is part of what makes HR such a dynamic career path.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What skills do I need to be an HR manager?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HR managers need a&nbsp;combination of business knowledge,&nbsp;people&nbsp;skills&nbsp;and practical experience. While there is no single path into the field,&nbsp;<strong>many professionals begin with a bachelor\u2019s degree in business, human resources or a related area such as economics,&nbsp;mathematics&nbsp;or data science.<\/strong>&nbsp;A strong foundation&nbsp;in data&nbsp;is helpful&nbsp;because HR managers often work with hiring metrics, employee performance&nbsp;information&nbsp;and workforce planning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Experience<\/strong>&nbsp;matters, too. Many HR managers begin in entry-level roles such as human resources assistant,&nbsp;coordinator&nbsp;or specialist&nbsp;positions&nbsp;before moving into leadership. Internships, campus&nbsp;jobs&nbsp;and part-time work can also help students build relevant skills early and better understand how workplaces&nbsp;operate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sablynski said today\u2019s HR professionals need more than just an interest in working with people.&nbsp;&#8220;We need people with&nbsp;<strong>high emotional intelligence<\/strong>&nbsp;to be able to find ways of getting things done,\u201d he said, adding that HR professionals also need to understand policies,&nbsp;procedures&nbsp;and fairness in the workplace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certifications can also strengthen a candidate\u2019s background over time. Depending on the role and career stage, professionals may pursue&nbsp;<strong>credentials<\/strong>&nbsp;such as the SHRM-CP from the Society for Human Resource Management or other HR certifications to deepen their knowledge and show commitment to the field.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as important are the&nbsp;<strong>personal skills<\/strong>&nbsp;HR managers use every day. Communication, collaboration, leadership, problem-solving&nbsp;and organization all play&nbsp;a major role&nbsp;in the work.&nbsp;Lovett&nbsp;emphasized the importance of staying organized and paying close attention to detail. \u201cNot letting people fall through the cracks and making sure that you\u2019re up on your reporting and your attention to detail and the way you track your candidates is huge to your success,\u201d she said.&nbsp;HR managers also need to be comfortable with workplace technology and able to adapt as tools and systems continue to change.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What impact does an HR manager have on an organization?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HR managers play&nbsp;an important role&nbsp;in the overall success of an organization because their work affects both employees and business operations. They help bring in strong candidates, support employee development,&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;policies&nbsp;and create systems that help workplaces run effectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also help shape employee experience. From onboarding and training to performance management and workplace culture, HR managers influence how supported,&nbsp;prepared&nbsp;and motivated employees feel in their roles. When HR is strong, employees are more likely to understand expectations, have access to&nbsp;resources&nbsp;and feel connected to the organization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sablynski said strong HR departments help&nbsp;connect employee needs with organizational goals. \u201cMany good HR departments match what people want, what they\u2019re&nbsp;good at and&nbsp;what they\u2019re&nbsp;motivated to do,\u201d he said. \u201cWe align that with what the company needs.\u201d&nbsp;For students interested in business and working with people, that impact is part of what makes HR such a meaningful career path.
