College is a major investment, but there are many ways to make it more manageable. From financial aid and scholarships to campus resources, student discounts and everyday spending habits, small choices can help reduce costs over time.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning how to save money in college starts with understanding what is available to you. At Pacific, there are resources to help you make the most of college without paying extra for every service, activity or support system you might need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the biggest things students can do is understand all of their options before making financial decisions,\u201d said Kaitlyn Goslinga, senior assistant director of financial aid at Pacific. \u201cI regularly talk with students who don\u2019t realize their school may offer payment plans, additional scholarship opportunities or other resources that can help.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with financial aid\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the best ways to save money as a college student is to stay on top of financial aid. Students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year, pay attention to deadlines and check for any missing requirements from their college. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families should also have honest conversations early about what they can contribute, what costs the student may need to cover and whether borrowing will be part of the plan, and revisit this conversation as necessary as time goes on.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFinancial aid has its own language and terminology, and there is no expectation that students or parents should already know how everything works,\u201d Goslinga said. She encourages families to get in touch with university financial aid offices early in the application process, so that university staff can help them understand their options.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholarships can be an important component of financial support throughout college.  Goslinga recommends students continue looking for scholarships each year, including opportunities for continuing students, upper-division students and students in specific majors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the biggest mistakes I see is students waiting too long,\u201d she said. \u201cWhether it\u2019s filing the FAFSA, applying for scholarships or submitting requested documents, delays can sometimes mean missing out on opportunities.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay on track academically <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Saving money in college is not only about spending less. It is also about making steady progress toward your degree.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passing your classes helps you avoid the cost of retaking courses and can help you stay on track to graduate on time. It also matters for financial aid eligibility.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Pacific, students need to maintain an overall 2.0 GPA and successfully complete at least 67% of all the units they attempt. This is known as Satisfactory Academic Progress, or SAP, and it is reviewed at the end of every academic year.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best way to protect your progress is to ask for help early. Meet with your professor during office hours, connect with your academic advisor, use tutoring services or take advantage of learning support programs before a class becomes difficult to recover from.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t wait until you\u2019re failing a class,\u201d Goslinga said. \u201cAsking for help early can make all the difference.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Build a simple budget <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A budget does not have to be complicated to be useful. It can be a spreadsheet, a notes app, a banking app or another system that helps you see how much money you have coming in and where it goes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students should plan for regular expenses like food, laundry, toiletries, transportation and school supplies, along with occasional costs like clothes, entertainment, trips or unexpected fees.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI encourage students to pay attention to where their money is going,\u201d Goslinga said. \u201cYou don\u2019t need a complicated budget, but a basic understanding of your income and expenses can go a long way toward reducing financial stress.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you know where your money goes, it becomes easier to make small changes. You may decide to limit takeout, skip a few impulse purchases, make coffee at home or set aside money each month for larger expenses.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you use a credit card, look for one without annual fees and avoid carrying a balance when possible. Interest and late fees can make everyday purchases more expensive over time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSmall habits absolutely add up,\u201d Goslinga said. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to think, \u2018It\u2019s only $10,\u2019 but those purchases really do add up over the course of a semester.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use campus resources before paying out of pocket <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Before buying something new or paying for an outside service, check whether your college already offers a free or low-cost option. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
