Douglass Eberhardt Tribute

Douglass Eberhardt ′59, the loving and devoted patriarch of a successful Stockton family, was known as a "banker with a big heart" and embodied University of the Pacific′s call to live, learn and lead with purpose. He is remembered for his generosity to his family, extraordinary community philanthropy and involvement, and unwavering commitment to the university.

A Stockton native and the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce′s Stocktonian of the Year for 2007, Mr. Eberhardt died Nov. 8, 2018. He was 80. The exterior of Weber Hall, home of the Eberhardt School of Business, will be lighted until after his memorial service.

Mr. Eberhardt was the CEO and chairman of the Bank of Stockton and a past Pacific regent serving from 2000-09 and again from 2010-13. The university′s school of business is named in his family′s honor and members of the Eberhardt family continue to serve as regents, including current Regent Mary-Elizabeth Eberhardt Sandstrom, Mr. Eberhardt′s niece.

"Throughout his life, Doug Eberhardt has been an exemplary member of the community, working on behalf of many important causes over the years," said Kevin Huber ′86, chair of Pacific′s Board of Regents and president and CEO of Grupe Commercial Co. "The Eberhardt School of Business and its Student Investment Fund are examples of his passionate devotion to Pacific students. Doug and his family′s service, philanthropy and leadership have brought tremendous honor to our university and their legacy will be everlasting at Pacific."

Mr. Eberhardt and the Bank of Stockton donated $1 million to establish the Student Investment Fund in 2007 so students could make investment decisions with real money. The value of the fund, which regularly outperforms Wall Street indicators, has grown to $3.7 million and has given back $1 million to the university for the speech-language pathology program, the men′s water polo team, and the Eberhardt School of Business.

"When I was young, I only wish someone had let me have the chance to invest money and had a class in it," Mr. Eberhardt told IndependentBanker.org for a story earlier this month about the fund.  "There are classes that may teach you about all kinds of investments, but they don′t teach you about how to invest."
