Burkhart, EdD, MEd, BSDH, RDH This course will address the current trends in our medical system and how dental findings can support total health for our patients. Statistics on autoimmune diseases and the main disease states that are involved in cancer development, as well as the changes in our current population worldwide, will be discussed. Oral pathology entities such as mucosal diseases, multiple autoimmune diseases and cultural customs practiced by many entering our country can result in lesions, oral cancer or pigmentation in many patients. Subjects such as tobacco use, betel quid and toumbak will be covered as well as autoimmune disorders. The importance of biopsy and additional tests will be discussed with an explanation of why these are important in reaching a diagnosis.  You Will Learn To recognize the signs that may indicate an autoimmune disease in your patient To understand why some individuals remain healthy and to interpret factors that may contribute to longevity To discern oral implications that should not be ignored The importance of conducting a proper oral exam for every patient at each visit To distinguish the oral implications of “cultural norms” that may impact the oral tissues of patients Are You Air Aware? Dental practitioners can be collaborative partners in screening for airway health and disordered breathing, sleep and TMD. This course will provide participants with information on the prevalence of disordered breathing, as well as the key medical, dental and mental symptoms of poor airway health. Interactive activities will provide attendees an opportunity to use their cell phone to assess their own intraoral and extraoral photos and to assess dental red flags for breathing concerns. There will be a demonstration on how to utilize intraoral cameras to capture airway images that can be utilized for airway education, referrals and documentation.
