Analytics are used in variety of fields

Feb 24, 2015

University of the Pacific is accepting applications for its new masters of science in analytics program. Here are just some of the industries where analytics are being used:

Health care: Analytics are quickly becoming key in the health care field, enabling better systems for improving patient outcomes and managing risk.

Business: Companies of all sizes are in need of trained professionals who know how to work with data to evaluate market and consumer behavior, anticipate market trends, and gauge other indicators.

Law: In law, analytics are increasingly used in jury selection, determining damages, and by clients seeking to find the right law firm.

Security: Analysts are critical to securing publicly and privately owned data by understanding previous mistakes and developing improved security protocols.

Sports: Think batting averages, earned run averages and any other sports statistic. Think "Moneyball," a best-selling book turned into a 2011 film starring Brad Pitt. Analytics are used to generate and analyze sports statistics to evaluate player and team performance, player compensation and even in forecasting injuries.

Social media: Analytics applied to social media channels can tell an organization or business how well it is engaging with clients, audiences and customers. Analytics can be used to make tweaks - or wholescale shifts - in social media and business practices.

Energy: Analytics are changing this sector through everything from smart meters to improved maintenance.

Politics: Predictive analytics have changed how political campaigns target voters.
