Cancellation Opportunities

  Your Federal Perkins loan may qualify to be cancelled if you perform full-time services in one of the following professions:

1.  Teacher

a)  in a school serving student from low-income families;  To Verify if your school qualifies
b)  special education teacher; or
c)  in the fields of mathematics, science, foreign languages, or bilingual education, or in any other field of expertise that is determined by the state education agency to have a shortage of qualified teachers in that state.

2.  Tribal College or University

a)  full-time faculty members

3.  Head Start

a)  full-time staff member in the educational part of a preschool program carried out under the Head Start Act.

4.  Pre-Kindergarten or Child Care

a)  full-time staff in a pre-kindergarten or child care program licensed or regulated by the State

5.  Early Intervention Services

a)  qualified professional provider of early intervention service in a public or other nonprofit program under public supervision

6.  Child or Family Services

a)  employed full-time by a child and family service agency and,
b)  provide services directly and exclusively to high-risk children from low-income communities

7.  Librarian

a)  with a Master's degree in Library Sciences and,
b)  employed in a low-income school or a public library serving low-income schools

8.  Volunteer Service

a)  Peace Corps; or
b)  AmeriCorps*VISTA (AmeriCorps do not qualify for this cancellation unless it is a part of the VISTA program)

9.  Military Service

a)  active duty;
b)  serving in areas of hostility. An updated listing of hostile fire/imminent danger pay areas can be found at:  http://www.dfas.mil/militarymembers/payentitlements/specialpay/hfp_idp.html.
c)  U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, National Guard or the Reserves

10. Firefighter

11. Law Enforcement or Corrections Officer

a)  activities pertain to crime prevention, control, or reduction or to the enforcement of the criminal law such as police officer; corrections, probation, or parole authorities; or
b)  prosecuting attorney whose primary responsibilities are to prosecute criminal cases on behalf of public law enforcement agencies

12. Public Defender

a)  a community defender organization is a defender organization established in accordance with section 3006A(g)(2)(B) of Title 18, United State Code.
b)  a federal public defender organization is a defender organization established in accordance with section 3006A(g)(2)(B) of Title 18, United State Code.                                                                                                                                          

13. Nurse or Medical Technician

a)  Nurse: a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, or other individual who is licensed by the appropriate state agency as providing nursing services.
b)  Medical Technician:  An Allied health professional (working in fields such as therapy, dental hygiene, medical technology, or nutrition)

14. Speech Language Pathologist

a)  with a Master's degree; and
b)  be working exclusively with Title I-eligible schools.
