Beyond Our Gates represents Pacific's commitment to community partnerships that improve lives in our region.
Led by University of the Pacific and partners from throughout San Joaquin County, the Beyond Our Gates initiative is a collaborative effort to improve the social and economic health of our region.
In 2010, President Pamela Eibeck convened a series of public forums where concerned citizens discussed the community's most urgent problems and began considering solutions. Through this conversation — one that continues — education emerged as a pressing challenge, but also as our most promising means of enhancing quality of life.
In response, the University has pledged to work alongside local individuals and organizations at preparing more of our young people for college:
- Research shows that the ability to read at grade-level by the end of third grade is a powerful predictor of future academic success. But it's a benchmark too many local children fail to reach. Through San Joaquin Reads, the University and its Beyond Our Gates partners strive to improve early literacy.
- We also have launched the Tomorrow Project, an initiative in which specialized academies offer elementary and high school students skills, resources and sustained support in preparing for and pursuing higher education.
- To help guide Pacific's ongoing community-engagement priorities, President Eibeck has convened the Beyond Our Gates Community Council, an advisory body made up of local leaders representing business, education, nonprofit and other fields.
- The University also is working to fuel continuing discussions of our region's most critical issues through the Beyond Our Gates Dialogue series, which invites top thinkers and practitioners to share their cutting-edge views on education.
We to seek the community's support, feedback and ideas as we move forward in building new and meaningful partnerships. To contribute your thoughts, contact Community Relations Manager Jennifer Torres Siders at (209) 946-3134 or email@example.com.
