The following list of Learning Outcomes provides a broad overview of the skills and knowledge that students majoring in the department are expected acquire

Students should be able to:

Disciplinary Knowledge

Demonstrate knowledge of microeconomics and macroeconomic theory at the intermediate level.

Use basic statistical techniques to test hypothesis and understand statistical work.

Communication Skills

Write clearly and persuasively for readers of economic literature.

Additional goals and outcomes for B.A. majors are as follows:


Students should be able to:

Disciplinary Knowledge

Describe and explain fundamental concepts and applications and demonstrate knowledge in four fields of economics, such as economic history, international trade, international finance, economic development, public finance, monetary economics, urban economics, industrial organization, environmental and resource economics, mathematical economics, political economy, labor economics and health economics.

Research Skills

Review literature and write papers on the history of economic thought.

Frame testable hypotheses based on micro and macro economic theory and fields of study, select correct statistical tests, locate appropriate data for testing hypotheses, reject/accept hypotheses correctly, analyzes results, and write up the research findings.

The learning objectives for students completing the Bachelor of Science in Economics are listed below, followed by the University-wide learning objectives to which they map.   Each of these goals contributes in part to the University's mission statement of providing "a superior, student-centered learning experience integrating liberal arts and professional education and preparing individuals for lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities."
