Career Paths

An economics degree provides you with an array of subject-specific as well as broadly transferable skills highly sought after by employers.

Economics graduates have the training and tools conduct analysis of complex issues for businesses, governments or other organizations, use mathematical modelling to make predictions about how people and markets behave, use statistical analysis to evaluate policies, programs or events, and communicate complex concepts to widely varied audiences. Most common for economics graduates are careers in wide-range of businesses spanning from banks to breweries. However economics majors are also successful in law, government, non-profits, public policy, international relations, and academic institutions.   For more information on career possibilities, visit or the American Economics Association and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

While an economics major is attractive for the  breadth of exciting career possibilities, it also helps that so many of them are financially rewarding.  The chart below shows the median earnings for economics majors (green line) compared to finance (blue line), accounting and actuarial science (purple line), and all majors (orange line) during one's working lifetime.

As you can see, those majoring in economics have a strong projection from the beginning to mid-career and then becomes more aligned among those with finance degrees.
