A team at Pacific had its poster on "Development of Student Pharmacists' Confidence in the Delivery of Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Services: From the Classroom to the Community" accepted as one of the top five posters submitted for the 2013 American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) Annual Meeting in November. The authors of the poster are Dr. Allen Shek, Dr. Joseph Woelfel '70, '72, '78, Kelli Chen '14, Susan Deng '14, Lana Nguyen '14, Aaron Tran '14, Dr. Rajul Patel '06, '09, Dr. Sian Carr-Lopez '85, Dr. Suzanne Galal and Dr. Berit Gundersen.
"We are very proud of our accomplishments, and it is an honor to have been selected by the judges," said Tran.
As a finalist, a member of the team was invited to make a 10 minute oral presentation of their research during an educational session at the meeting. Finalists also competed for two final awards: judges category and "people's choice" (audience) category. Pacific was named the grand prize winner for the "people's choice" category.
The purpose of this poster is to study the confidence level of student pharmacists in providing Medication Therapy Management after having completed the two semester Medicare Part D elective course. Through this course student pharmacists apply what they learn in the classroom at outreach events. Student pharmacists' confidence levels are recorded at three different stages: beginning of course, at the end of the course and at the end of the experiential experience. What they found is that student pharmacists' confidence increase by an average of 57% after the completion of the course and by an additional 10-20% after the completion of experiential experiences. As a result, it will encourage other schools to incorporate a blended teaching model as part of the curriculum to help optimize student pharmacists' learning.
Tran, Chen, Deng and Nguyen have all completed the Medicare Part D course themselves and hope to pursue publication of their research.
"Research projects, like the ones we are involved in, are vital to the development of student pharmacists' education by encouraging students to critically think and take the didactic learning to another application level. For me personally, I feel that that these research studies help me become a practitioner early on by being involved beyond the classroom," said Tran.
