Byron Meth has soaked up all that is Augusta National - the meticulously manicured grounds, Butler Cabin and Amen Corner. He's felt its history. He's seen Woods, Mickelson and McIlroy. On Thursday, he'll be watched by thousands of patrons, and, if he plays well, perhaps by millions on TV. "It's just an honor to play," the 22-year-old Pacific senior said two weeks ago while practicing at Stockton Golf and Country Club. "It's really been a childhood dream, and to be able to do it my last year as an amateur is very special."

Monterey Jazz Festival announces 2015 Next Generation Jazz Festival winners

In the College Combo Division, top honors went to University of the Pacific Combo, Patrick Langham, director, winning for the first time in the division. The runner-up was University of Miami Frost School of Music Stamps Quintet (Coral Gables, Fla.), Chuck Bergeron, director. Third place went to the Stanford University Jazz Combo (Palo Alto, Calif.), Jim Nadel, director. The University of the Pacific Combo will perform at the 58th annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.

San Joaquin Co. jobs - upward revision
The San Joaquin County job market during 2014 was far stronger than initially thought, according to a new report that underscores the emergence of the region as Greater Silicon Valley. "This is a real positive for San Joaquin County," said Jeffrey Michael, director of the Center for Business and Policy Research. "We are getting close to the point where San Joaquin County will have recovered all the jobs it lost in the Great Recession."

Pacific senior Frankie Arburua III took a big step forward Wednesday toward realizing his dream of producing grass-fed, free-range rabbits from his family's farm near Tracy by winning a share of $22,500 in cash and prizes from the San Joaquin Entrepreneur Challenge. Arburua's business professor prompted him to enter the contest.
