Academic Internships Guidelines

Student Requirements

To ensure that undergraduate students are qualified to serve in an academic internship they must meet the following requirements:

  • Attain Junior standing, having completed 60 or more credit hours.
  • Maintain a 2.7 GPA overall and in the business major.
  • Receive a "B" or better in the business course most closely associated with the internship.
  • Work 16 to 20 hours per week, for the length of a semester, or an equivalent number of hours.
  • Participate in an internship orientation to receive professional preparation and training.
  • Complete all academic assignments agreed upon with their faculty supervisor.

Employer Commitment

As a partner in the internship experience, the employer agrees to:

  • Provide the intern exposure to management and decision-making processes.
  • Provide tasks that challenge the intern's ability.
  • Communicate with the faculty supervisor as needed.
  • Meet for at least one on-site visit or conference call with the intern and faculty supervisor.

Faculty Obligations

The faculty member participates in the student's learning experience by:

  • Helping the student determine goals and objectives for the internship.
  • Clarifying the work and learning activities of the internship with the employer and student.
  • Requiring the student to complete academic assignments in addition to regular journal submissions describing the work experience.
  • Communicating as needed with the supervisor, including an on-site visit.

The Partnership

Hiring a student intern offers employers the ability to develop:

  • A hiring pool with a high permanent placement rate
  • Lower recruiting costs
  • A higher rate of retention
  • Better-trained employees

Through the Academic Internship at Eberhardt School of Business the employer partners with the University in developing a workforce of educated, experienced professionals who are well prepared and confident to enter the workplace. Upon graduation, the student is ready to make a significant contribution to their employer.
