What’s a Hook? Motivating Students Via Problem-Based Learning
Thursday, Sept. 18, 2-3pm, CTL Classroom and Zoom
Facilitated by Dr. Osvaldo Jimenez (School of Engineering and Computer Science, CTL Faculty Fellow)
Come to this workshop to meet “Ozwaldo”, a hypothetical Computer Science professor here at Pacific that loves teaching about pointers (a foundational computer science topic) but just can’t seem to get his students as excited about it. He shows great emotion as he lectures and even paces around the classroom,
but gets discouraged when he sees his students playing games during lecture or watching social media. How can we help Ozwaldo solve this problem?
If you’re not sure or even if you have an idea, the first step would be to come to this workshop! Here participants will learn about hooks, which are initial anecdotes used to pique student interest and how hooks and problem-based learning can engage students. Participants will also brainstorm ways to get students interested in a domain area of expertise by connecting it to a problem in the real-world and will end by generating some sound advice to help Ozwaldo become the teacher scholar the Pacific community treasures!
