Pacific celebrates Sustainability Month

Since 2013, University of the Pacific has been highlighting sustainability through a variety of events during the month of April. Events celebrate sustainability at Pacific and provide opportunities to learn about living sustainably.

The 2019 Sustainability Month kicks off with a panel and networking event  April 2 on "Sustainability in Industry," featuring speakers who represent government, tech, wine, engineering and construction industries.

John MuirA highlight of this year's events will be a special day honoring the legacy of John Muir and celebrating the permanent gift of the John Muir Papers to University of the Pacific. The festivities begin at 1 p.m. on April 13 with the screening of the documentary film, "The Unruly Mystic, John Muir," followed by a John Muir Legacy Fair on Knoles Lawn at 2:30 p.m. The culminating event of the day at 3:30 p.m. will be the formal announcement of the gift of the Muir Papers.

Sustaining Pacific worked with 17 different community and campus partners to put together these special events. There are opportunities to explore fashion at the Green Fashion Show, learn how to grow vegetables, talk to professionals, form better habits, celebrate the roots of environmental conservation, and more. Another first is a clothing swap that sustainability coordinator Kelsey Smith says, "will give everybody a chance to channel their inner Marie Kondo!"

"I hope that this month of events will get more people to realize that sustainability is about more than just recycling and planting trees," says Smith. "It can be integrated into almost all career paths, it can be part of our fashion, and it can be part of our day-to-day activities. Once you see the connections, it becomes so much easier to think of sustainable living as something that is pretty easy to do."
