Sixth annual Faculty Awards Recognition Dinner honors faculty members for teaching and scholarship

The annual Faculty Awards Recognition Dinner was held Thursday, Nov. 20, in the Regents Room. Three faculty members were recognized during the evening festivities. William Herrin received the Eberhardt Teacher-Scholar Award, Todd Davenport received the University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church, and Chemistry professor Jianhua Ren presented a research lecture as the recipient of the Faculty Research Lecture Award.

William "Bill" Herrin, Eberhardt Teacher-Scholar Award recipient

Bill Herrin, professor of economics and director of the School of International Studies, was the recipient of the Eberhardt Teacher-Scholar Award. He has been at Pacific since 1985. Dr. Herrin is described by his students as an energetic and effective teacher.  He has twice been honored as a Fulbright Scholar and has established a strong research agenda.  He is considered by colleagues as an excellent teacher and scholar, and a generous collaborator and mentor. 

Through the generosity of the Eberhardt family, the Eberhardt Teacher-Scholar Awards were established in 1989 to recognize exemplary teaching and scholarship. Each year the award is presented to faculty from the entire University who fulfill the highest aspirations of scholarship and service to students, colleagues and the profession.

Todd Davenport, University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award recipient

Dr. Todd Davenport, associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy of the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, was the recipient of the United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award. He has been at Pacific since 2007. He is an exceptional teacher, with exemplary scholarship and a proven "commitment to high standards of professional and personal life."  

The University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award of the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church recognizes outstanding faculty members for their dedication and contributions to the learning arts and their institutions. Selection is based on exceptional teaching, concern for students and colleagues, scholarly contribution and high professional and personal standards.

Jianhua Ren, Faculty Research Lecturer

Dr. Jianhua Ren, professor of chemistry in the College of the Pacific, presented the lecture "The Wonder of the Helical Peptides" as this year's faculty research lecturer. This award was established by the Faculty Research Committee to recognize faculty with a record of meritorious research or artistic contributions during their service at Pacific. Nominated and selected by peers, recipients of this prestigious award also receive a monetary award. 

Ren has been at Pacific since 2002.  Her research focuses on mass spectrometry and computational studies of the structures, chemical properties and reactivity of organic and biological molecules and ions, including small organic compounds peptides and peptoids; proteins; synthesis of peptide and peptoids; synthesis of magnetic beads. She has published more than twenty peer reviewed articles,  presented at numerous national and international conferences and has been awarded well in excess of a half million dollars in grant support for her research.  Dr. Ren brings honor and recognition to Pacific through her research.
