Pacific students and alumni network before their tour at LinkedIn's San Francisco office.

Students, alumni go inside LinkedIn

More than 120 students and alumni from University of the Pacific got a rare behind-the-scenes look inside one of tech's biggest names, LinkedIn.

Pacific Alumnus John Orofino '09, who manages a group of strategic business accounts for LinkedIn Corporation, organized the Jan. 23 visit at the company's sales, marketing and operations office in downtown San Francisco.

"I wanted to find an opportunity to educate some students on the value of networking and have a space here at LinkedIn to bring students and alumni together to hopefully impact their career development," said Orofino, who majored in political science and journalism at Pacific.

Students had the exclusive opportunity to tour several floors of LinkedIn's 25-story building. They saw many features tech companies are famous for: open-concept workspaces, cafeterias that offer free breakfast and lunch, relaxation areas and inspirational murals.  On LinkedIn's 17th floor was an event space with a terrace that offered a panoramic view of San Francisco's downtown skyline.

Orofino worked with Pacific's Alumni Association and the university's Career Resource Center. The College of the Pacific contributed to the cost of transportation from Stockton to San Francisco. It is the first in a series of trips to area businesses through a new university program called Tiger Trek.

"This opportunity to tour LinkedIn's offices really demonstrates the power of Pacific's alumni network," said Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations Kelli Page. "Our network is big enough that there are broad opportunities to connect in many industries, but small enough that you can create real relationships you can count on when it comes time to enter the workforce."

Orofino and two other Pacific alumni, Tenny Wan '10 and Will Tagg '10, explained the Pacific network was key in their paths to LinkedIn.

"Every step away from UOP to entering the workforce to going to a couple companies now has always gone back to networking," said Tagg.

Wan added it is also important to take risks, especially early in your career. "There's a very key component to timing and luck, but unless you see the opportunity and grasp that opportunity, you're going to miss that train," she said.

Here are career tips the three LinkedIn employees shared:
1)     Networking is key to getting jobs - when you know someone in the company, you have a higher chance of being noticed in a large pool of applicants.
2)     Connect with people on LinkedIn only after you have met them in person.
3)     Build your LinkedIn profile and stay active.
