2025 Dental Hygiene Symposium
2025 Dental Hygiene Symposium
09:00 a.m. - 04:00 p.m.
Join us for the annual Dental Hygiene Symposium at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. We are excited to feature Jo-Anne Jones who will present on 'WNL: Within Normal Limits or a Dangerous Assumption?' and Marianne Dryer who will present on 'Artificial Intelligence for Diagnosing and Classifying Periodontal Disease.'
WNL: Within Normal Limits or a Dangerous Assumption?
Jo-Anne Jones, RDH
Within normal limits (WNL) is a bold and broad sweeping statement that distinguishes between health and disease and in some cases, an outcome of life versus death. The complexities of clinical presentation do not always make this an easy task. Through a guided visual journey of inspiring and moving oral and oropharyngeal cancer survivors and those who have lost their lives, you will learn the subtle life-saving symptoms and screening techniques that will increase your opportunity to save a patient's life! This is a presentation you will never forget.
You Will Learn:
- To recognize the incidence and five-year survival rates of current oral and oropharyngeal cancer
- To explore the critical components and palpation techniques of today's oral/oropharyngeal cancer screening exam
- To understand the role adjunctive screening devices play in enhancing our assessment capabilities
- To be equipped with both clinical and educational resources to effectively assess, manage and educate today's population
Artificial Intelligence for Diagnosing and Classifying Periodontal Disease
Marianne Dryer, MEd, RDH
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the capability to improve the accuracy and efficiency of periodontal disease classification and diagnosis, which is vital to achieving the best outcomes for patient care. There has not been a significant improvement in the methodology for detecting bone loss and assessing the severity of attachment apparatus loss despite the recent updates in the periodontal classification system.
This lecture will introduce dental professionals to artificial intelligence and its application to periodontal disease assessment. Ms. Dryer will provide an overview of AI concepts and terminology and explain how AI systems provide more efficient, reliable data configurations for appropriate therapy recommendations. You will have an opportunity to visualize examples of AI applications depicting clinical attachment loss and compare the exam findings to non-AI periodontal charting.
You Will Learn:
- To attain an understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its use in dentistry
- To identify the value of incorporating AI into the staging and grading process as it relates to clinical efficiency and calibration
- To recognize the impact AI has on patient communication, ethical detachment and treatment acceptance
- To discover the value of AI as it relates to documentation accuracy and speed of dental insurance processing
Who Should Attend:
This informative symposium is intended for dental hygienists, dentists and other allied dental professionals.
This activity is designated for 6 units of continuing education credit.
Symposium includes lunch and coffee/tea service in the morning.
