Part of McGeorge's hands-on approach to the law school experience includes regular academic guidance to help you identify your goals, access useful resources, and design an academic plan that will prepare you to meet your objectives.
Interim Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Rebekah Grodsky, '10, is available to meet with students throughout the year. McGeorge Academic Planning Appointments — or MAP Appointments as we call them — may be scheduled at any time by contacting the Office of Student Affairs by email or at 916.739.7089.
Faculty members are accessible to assist you in designing your academic program. Professors serve as directors for each of our Certificates of Concentration and in addition, are specialists in their areas of scholarship and prior legal practice.
In addition to one-on-one meetings, the Office of Student Affairs also annually publishes a student handbook (a.k.a., the Black Book), which is a comprehensive reference guide for students. There you will find detailed information about graduation requirements, academic policies, program descriptions, and more. First-year students receive a printed Black Book during Orientation. Please refer to this document as questions arise.
Whether you arrive at McGeorge with a clear idea of the kind of lawyer you want to be, or plan to explore a variety of opportunities during your legal studies, it can be difficult to decide which combination of core classes, experiential learning programs, and electives to pursue. To help students sort through the many curricular and co-curricular options, the Faculty, in conjunction with the Career Development Office, has developed an online self-help advising tool called the Pathways to the Legal Profession.
The Pathways conveniently identify paths of legal study and group related coursework (and in some cases, co- and extra-curricular activities) under the following areas of interest: Alternative Dispute Resolution, Business Law, Capital Lawyering (Law & Policy), Civil Litigation, Commercial & Financial Services, Criminal Law, Education, Elder Law, Employment & Labor Law, Environmental Law, Family Law & Estate Planning, Government Practice, Health Law, Immigration Law, Intellectual Property, International Law, Public Interest & Civil Rights, Real Estate & Land Use Law, Tax & Estate Planning Law, and Water Resources Law.
