Pacific Academic Advising supports students in virtual environment

Academic Advising at University of the Pacific has taken no breaks while going virtual, still working to complement the work of faculty advisors and be a key part of the educational journey for students.

“The Academic Advising team works with students in providing a clear pathway so that students will successfully obtain their undergraduate degree,” explained Abi Ingleton, Director of Academic Advising and Student Success.

The mission of Academic Advising is to provide quality, student-centered consultation that intentionally supports academic, professional and personal growth. They can help support transitioning to college life, clarify university and degree requirements, guide in exploring majors and careers and assist in developing a personalized academic plan to help students thrive.

Advisers have moved their in-person meetings with students online for the fall semester so they are still able to help those who need it.

“Students seem much more at ease speaking with us and that could be because they are in a comfortable, familiar place,” said Ingleton “That ease and familiarity with their location allows for a more engaged and forthright conversations.”

Baljit Singh, a senior Psychology major, has utilized Academic Advising’s virtual services.  “Academic advising has helped me focus on aspects that are directly related to my future plans. I am very satisfied with the help that was provided. I not only have a better sense of direction regarding my future, but also more confidence knowing that I am not alone in my venture and have the guidance and assistance that can help me be successful.”

With the sudden move to online advising, the advisers agree that they have not seen a decrease of appointments and are still able to give the students the attention they deserve. If you are struggling with choosing your classes, deciding on a major or creating an academic plan, then Academic Advising will be able to help you.
