Whether pain is caused by infection, or by our own procedures, patients expect us to relieve their pain. The more severe the pain, the quicker and more potent they want the solution to be. You will first learn about the inflammatory, neurological and psychological processes that contribute to the great range of pain responses you encounter. Dr. Young will cover approaches in effective pain management that can prevent a need for narcotics in several cases. Judicious and individualized use of narcotics requires a good understanding of a number of concepts. You will learn how narcotics work and how they compare to each other and to other forms of pain control, in addition to dosing, how dependence and addiction occur and how that differs by age and by psychological make-up.
