For underserved patients, hygienists treating cavities is something to smile about

Paul Glassman, professor of dental practice and director of the Pacific Center for Special Care, is spearheading a new model of dental care, called virtual or tele-dentistry, in which hygienists work remotely but in consultation with dentists.
Glassman said he hopes that "it will become ubiquitous and a way to reach people who are not getting dental care."

Gay civil rights activist and alumnus Bill Jones '51 helped to dedicate Pacific's new Rainbow Resource and Study Room. His hope is that students and alumni of any sexual preference can have a safe place to go and learn more about their community, important LGBT historical figures and accept each other for who they are. "I'm so grateful to the people at Pacific like President Pamela Eibeck for being very open and progressive," Jones said. "Honestly, one person who was really the fireball was Steve Jacobson; he said he was going to make it happen and he pushed to get it."

Venezuelan pianist Ed Simon says hello to Bay Area jazz community

Pianist Ed Simon emigrated to the U.S. from Venezuela in 1984, part of a wave of brilliant Latin-American musicians infusing the New York scene with influences beyond Cuba and Brazil. This spring, he served as artist-in-residence at the Brubeck Institute, and he's been invited back as faculty in the fall.

Incensed by a new law mandating full vaccination for schoolchildren, some Sacramento-area voters are attempting to boot the law's author from office. It won't be easy, said Mary-Beth Moylan, professor of law: "It's a hard sell. It may be that there are lots of people across the state that are upset about the vaccine bill, but it's a fairly narrow complaint."
