Students drive Southwest Hall’s new design
A new residence hall being built on University of the Pacific’s Stockton Campus will reflect student input in its modern interior while replicating the historic façade of the former Southwest Hall when it opens to second-year students in the fall.
Under the leadership of Vice President for Student Life Maria Blandizzi and Assistant Vice President for Student Life Josh O’Connor, the design process included significant input from students.
“Students had a very heavy hand in the creation of this building,” O’Connor said. “We had focus groups with students to really understand what their main living needs were.”
The feedback directly influenced key aspects of the building’s design, from furniture choices and suite layouts to shared spaces that support both academic and social life.
As part of a new faculty-in-residence program, the residence hall will also include housing for faculty members and their families. Each apartment will feature two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, a kitchen and a dining area.
“We’re hoping to attract faculty who are deeply committed to student success to live in these apartments,” Blandizzi said. “Our faculty-in-residence program will allow faculty members to connect and engage with students beyond the classrooms.”
First built in 1946, the original Southwest Hall was one of the nine oldest buildings on campus. The new building incorporates design elements inspired by the historic structure, including locally sourced bricks that match the original.
The three-floor building will feature suite-style accommodations with nearly 400 beds, three suites for faculty, a lounge space and 12 study rooms equipped with monitors, whiteboards and conference tables.
Pacific has invested $113 million in new and renovated housing on the Stockton Campus since 2019. The university also offers a four-year housing guarantee for all undergraduates.
