An exhibition of art from the University Permanent Art Collection

University of the Pacific’s Reynolds Gallery is pleased to present 13%, an exhibition of work from the university’s permanent art collection, on view Thursday, November 10, through December 9, 2022.

In 2019, researchers investigated gender and ethnic diversity in the collections of 18 major US museums including two university museums. They discovered that regardless of size or collecting mission around 87% of their collection was made up of art created by white men. The remaining 13% is composed of art made by women and artists of color. The University of the Pacific’s own permanent art collection yields the same number. This student curated exhibition is a selection from Pacific’s own 13%.

Artists comprising this 13% have had their artistic journeys plagued by roadblocks and exclusion. History has told them, and countless others, that they will be taken less seriously in the arts industry. With less publicity and participation in the art market, and fewer connections to collectors and cultural institutions like museums, these artists went about their work anyway.

Diversity is evident not only in the racial and gender identities of these artists but also in the stories of how their work came to be part of the university collection through donations by faculty, community members, Pacific alumni, and special friends.

Arranged by the colors of the rainbow to shape a formal connection, this exhibition showcases work by those who have had fewer opportunities and reminds us of how art empowers the creative ability of every identity.

This exhibition was curated, researched, written, and designed by Introduction to Museum Studies students: Melanie Belisario, Julissa Cano, Josephine Corral, Andrew Garcia, Madison Miller, Thi Kim Ngan Nguyen, Yasmeen Seddeek, Taylor Wick, Jazzy Woods, Kayleigh Woodward, and Brianna Yoritate led by University Curator Lisa Cooperman.
