What if I’m not sure that I'm ready?
That’s completely normal. No one ever feels 100% ready, no matter what they say. Studying abroad is a chance for personal growth, and you’ll gain newfound confidence by stepping out of your comfort zone.
Will I lose my friends?
It’s a common concern, and a valid one. But let’s be honest: your real friends will stick with you, even across continents. With today’s technology, staying in touch is easier than ever. And the truth is, studying abroad opens the door to more friendships, both with fellow international students and people in your host country. The benefits far outweigh the costs when it comes to broadening your social circle and growing as a person.
Will I have a hard time connecting to people in a new country?
There will be challenges to adjust to. You’ll have to learn how to navigate new social dynamics; it’s like watching a new movie where you have to adjust to the characters and quickly learn their backstories. But, in the process, you will also gain confidence in yourself and your values. You will grow in new ways. That’s why we hear, almost like a mantra, from returning students that studying abroad was a “life changing experience.”
Making new friends takes some effort, but most students abroad are also looking to connect! Being open-minded, joining activities and saying yes to new things helps friendships happen naturally. Plus, making friends who are native to the host country will enrich your experience a thousand times more.
I’m scared to be alone.
This is a common feeling. There is a period of adjustment we all have to go through, but the feeling of loneliness will disappear as you acclimate and have fun. Here are a few tips to make things easier:
- Don’t isolate yourself— participate in icebreaker activities during the on-site orientation, join social groups or student clubs, and attend cultural events.
- Start building your community through your classes, roommates/neighbors, and other international students.
- Keep in touch with family members and U.S. friends— they can always visit you and you can be their personal tour guide!
If I go, will I still be able to graduate on time? Will it throw off my study plan?
Of course! With the help of a Study Abroad Advisor, your coursework abroad will be matched with equivalent coursework here. Imagine how rich your education will be with the tutelage of world-class professors in well known universities, studying alongside students from across the globe.
What if I cannot add more expenses to my current budget, which is already very tight?
When you study abroad through Pacific, your tuition and fees remain exactly the same. Your scholarships and financial aid still apply. You’re still a full Pacific student.
You only pay separately for housing and meals abroad. In many countries, that’s significantly cheaper than in the U.S:
- Florence, Italy: ~$700/month
- Lima, Peru: ~$500/month
- Guatemala City: ~$300/month
Students also have access to additional scholarships, both from Pacific and our partner organizations. Some students even receive 100% funding for their semester abroad, including living costs!
What if I fail?
There’s always a risk that things may not go perfectly. That can happen anywhere, even here at home. But here's the truth:
- You won’t be alone. Our office and the on-site coordinators will support you every step of the way with academic help, wellness resources and someone to talk to.
- Culture shock is real, but temporary. You’ll learn to adapt and you’ll grow immensely in the process.
- Failure? It’s extremely rare. And even if things don’t go as planned, you’ll come back stronger, wiser and ready for anything.
Okay, you’ve convinced me. What should I do next?
