Supporting your student’s study abroad journey

We understand that studying abroad is not just a student’s decision—it’s a family journey. Behind every student who applies to study abroad is a network of support: parents, grandparents, siblings and loved ones who help make this experience possible. We welcome you as partners in this exciting chapter of your student’s education.

Studying abroad is often one of the most rewarding and transformative experiences in a student’s college career. Whether it’s for a semester, a full year or a short-term program, students return with a deeper appreciation for both foreign and home cultures, greater personal maturity and broader global perspectives that shape their academic, personal and professional lives.

At Pacific, we believe global experiences are essential to preparing students for life after graduation. We also understand that as a parent or family member, you may feel a mix of pride, excitement and concern. That’s perfectly natural—and we’re here to support both you and your student every step of the way.

We understand that affordability is a major concern. At Pacific:

  • Almost all programs are covered by regular Pacific tuition.

  • All current financial aid applies to study abroad tuition.

  • Numerous scholarships and grants are available through Pacific and external partners.

  • Faculty-led programs are designed to be financially accessible, often offering reduced tuition compared to on-campus courses.

We continue to expand funding opportunities to make global experiences accessible to more students.

Students who study abroad gain:

  • Greater adaptability in unfamiliar settings

  • Intercultural communication skills

  • Resilience and problem-solving abilities

  • A stronger sense of academic purpose and personal direction

Things to consider before they go

  • Plan early: Financial planning is key. Be prepared for unexpected expenses that can arise with international travel.

  • Insurance: Most programs require international health insurance. Know what’s covered and keep key documents handy.

  • Consider visiting: A study abroad experience could be your chance to visit a new country—with your student as your personal tour guide!

Staying connected while they’re abroad

  • Create a communication plan: Stay in touch while giving your student the freedom to immerse themselves.

  • Encourage growth: Ask about their new foods, cultural discoveries, and academic experiences.

  • Support independence: Be a listener and guide, while allowing them to navigate challenges on their own.

  • Know we’re here: Our Global Education Office is available for both students and families. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
