Pacific announces two ways to honor Dr. Eric Hammer’s legacy

Eric HammerSince his tragic passing on January 28, 2019, Dr. Eric Hammer’s past students and friends have asked how they might honor his immense legacy at Pacific. Through a generous gift from his family, Pacific has announced two ways for those who loved Dr. Hammer to honor him and help sustain his two professional loves at the Conservatory of Music: music education and the Conservatory’s thriving band program.

Dr. Hammer (1951-2019) was a Pacific alumnus and a beloved director of bands and professor of music education in the Conservatory of Music. He inspired young musicians teaching at summer band camp, conducting honor bands, adjudicating band festivals and giving clinics at high schools. It was not uncommon for students to say that he was the reason they enrolled at Pacific. He guided music education student teachers as they launched their careers throughout California, and initiated and organized the Pacific Western Concert Band Festival held at Pacific for the past 13 years, which draws some 500 of the top student musicians from schools throughout the Western United States.

“Eric created a sense of community simply in the way he walked into a room. He brought people together, he was warm, endlessly energetic, and he believed that every child must sing, in school and throughout their lives,” said Peter Witte, dean of the Conservatory of Music.

Dr. Hammer was loved by his students and colleagues and is deeply missed. His legacy lives on, and we are grateful for the generous support of the Hammer family, who helped establish two ways to honor their dear Eric:

Eric HammerThe Hammer Family Memorial Scholarship honors the Hammer family’s long history with University of the Pacific. This new endowed fund provides scholarship support for students pursuing a degree in Music Education at Pacific.

Eric Hammer Memorial Band Fund provides annual support to the Conservatory of Music’s band program.

Gifts may be also made by check to University of the Pacific and mailed to 3601 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95211 (please, specify in the memo line the fund you would like to support).
