Jonas Bianchi
Dr. Jonas Bianchi is a dual-trained orthodontist, having completed his orthodontic residency at University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, as well as a Master’s and PhD in Orthodontics at São Paulo State University (UNESP). He later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan, strengthening his expertise in artificial intelligence, advanced imaging, and computational orthodontics.
As director of research for the Orthodontics Program, Dr. Bianchi leads cutting-edge investigations that integrate data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced 3D imaging from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to digital dental models to enhance diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient-specific outcomes.
Dr. Bianchi is widely published, with more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and 3D imaging applications in orthodontics. His research includes the development and validation of predictive machine-learning models for orthodontic and orthognathic decision-making, automated phenotype detection using CBCT and digital models, statistical shape analysis, deep-learning algorithms for craniofacial measurements, and AI-enhanced diagnostic workflows. His recent work also explores emerging applications of generative AI in dental education, digital treatment planning, and the use of automated informatics pipelines to support precision orthodontics.
In clinical teaching and practice, Dr. Bianchi emphasizes evidence-based protocols and trains residents across a comprehensive range of treatment modalities including segmented mechanics, aligner therapy, straight-wire techniques, temporary anchorage devices (TADs), 3D-printed appliances, and orthopedic interventions while integrating digital workflows and AI-driven tools throughout the treatment process.
Through the synergy of his research and teaching, Dr. Bianchi aims to shape the future of orthodontics, preparing clinicians to practice in a data-driven, personalized, and technologically advanced era of dental care.
Dr. Bianchi has been recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF) with multiple research awards supporting his work in advanced imaging, AI-driven diagnostics, and orthodontic outcomes. He also serves as a key collaborator on NIH R01–funded research focused on temporomandibular joint degenerative joint disease (TMJ-DJD), contributing expertise in 3D imaging, AI, and computational modeling to improve understanding, phenotype characterization, and early detection of joint degeneration.
