International Dental Students Honored with 2018 Dixon Scholarship Award

December 14, 2018

Drs. Mahek Pipalia and Na Wang, students in the International Dental Studies (IDS) Class of 2019, were both honored with the annual Dr. F. Gene and Rosemary Dixon IDS Scholarship Award during a ceremony on Dec. 4. The award recognizes recipients' outstanding academic achievements and involvement in student leadership. Each will receive an award check for $6,369 at graduation.

Dr. Na Wang graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Shandong University and went on to earn a Master of Dental Surgery with specializations in cariology and endodontology at Peking University. While at the Dugoni School, her GPA has put her at the top of her class each quarter. She was also the first student to participate in the new hospital rotation at Stanford University, and is involved in exchange programs with Chinese institutions.

Dr. Mahek Pipalia earned a bachelor's of dental surgery from D.A.P.M.R.V. Dental College & Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health sciences, Bangalore, India. At the Dugoni School she has served as a class representative for ADEA and AGD, volunteered at multiple events as a sim lab row instructor and performed dental work on a mission trip to Guatemala.

The Dixons, longtime donors and friends of the Dugoni School, created the Dr. F. Gene and Rosemary Dixon IDS Endowment in spring 2005 to provide scholarships for international dental students at the dental school. Since 2005, the Dixon IDS Scholarship Award has distributed more than $80,000 to 28 IDS students at the Dugoni School on the basis of leadership and academic achievement.

IDS students hold dental degrees from schools outside the U.S., but need accreditation to practice in the United States. By completing the IDS program at the Dugoni School, students earn a U.S. doctor of dental surgery degree and eligibility to sit for any state or regional dental board in the country. For more information, visit the IDS section of the dental school's website.
