Music students have summer smorgasbord of virtual choices

Virtual music offerings continue throughout the summer at University of the Pacific’s Conservatory of Music.

The Summer Intermezzo Series, which has started, includes a diverse set of opportunities for incoming or continuing conservatory students as well as any Pacific students interested in music performance, history and the music industry.

Here is what is available:

  • American weird listening party: Available to all Pacific students, these four sessions led by Professor Kyle Bruckmann are described as “a casual and free-wheeling spelunking expedition into the margins of 20th century music history.”
  • Music therapy summer hootenanny: The bi-weekly sessions will focus on playing music and singing, including songs of the 1980s, jazz, Disney and more with Music Therapy Coordinator Casie Little and Professors Dr. Feilin Hsiao and Dr. Eric Waldon.
  • Work in progress meet-up for music creators: For all who are creating music, these sessions are an opportunity to share ideas, receive feedback and generate more music. Dr. Andrew Conklin will curate.
  • Summer listening hour: Professor Jesse Barrett’s June and July virtual gatherings will center on wind chamber music.
  • Music management first Fridays: Conservatory and Media X students will take part in conversations and breakout groups with music and entertainment industry leaders. Professor Keith Hatschek will curate.
  • Exploring solo repertoire: Each of the five master classes, led by Professor Sadie Glass, will conclude with students’ solo performances (music and voice).
  • Double bass master class: Professor Thomas Derthick’s offerings will include help preparing for fall ensemble auditions and work and feedback on solo pieces. Pacific music ensembles are open by audition to all Pacific students.
  • Flute master class: Three sessions, led by Professor Mathew Krejci, will help students prepare for the fall ensemble auditions open to all Pacific students.
  • Bassoon reed making: Bassoonists know the importance of having a good supply of reeds. Professor Nicolasa Kuster will lead the four sessions.
  • Check Out Chekhov: Pacific Opera Theatre Director James Haffner’s June 5 offering will focus on the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique.
