College of the Pacific

Laura Gutierrez, assistant professor of history, received a 12-month Career Enhancement Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. The Career Enhancement Fellowship, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and administered by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, creates career development opportunities for selected faculty fellows with promising research projects. During this time, she will be completing her book manuscript, "A Constant Threat: Deportation and Return Migration to Mexico in the 20th Century."

Michael Leonard, visiting assistant professor of art and graphic design, was a judge for the 2019 Spring Art Show for the Lodi Unified School District grades 9–12. The show is sponsored by the Lodi Unified School District and the Got Kids Foundation.  

Lisa Tromovitch, professor of Media X, is serving as an adviser to the National Endowment for the Arts as a panelist for the Shakespeare in American Communities: Schools grant program, administered by ArtsMidwest. She is currently reviewing applications and work samples from 62 companies across the nation.  

McGeorge School of Law

Jarrod Wong has been appointed co-chair of the 114th Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law in April 2020. He also serves on the society's executive committee. The four-day annual meeting attracts over 1,000 attendees, features over 230 speakers, and is one of the largest annual international law events in the U.S.  

Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Jill Duthie, associate professor of speech-language pathology, has been selected as the director of the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association District 3, which includes Alameda County, Contra Costa County, San Joaquin County and Stanislaus County.

Melissa Davies, assistant professor of health, exercise and sport sciences, had the article "Innovate with Design Thinking in the Sport Management Capstone Course" accepted for publication in the Sport Management Education Journal.  

Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

Len Tolstunov, associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, published "Surgical Algorithm for Alveolar Bone Augmentation in Implant Dentistry" in the journal Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America (31:2) May 2019. Tolstunov co-authored the article "Bone Augmentation Techniques for Horizontal and Vertical Alveolar Ridge Deficiency in Oral Implantology," also published in the journal Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America (31) 2019.

Ederlina Co, assistant professor of lawyering skills, had her essay, "Teaching Cultural Competence as a Fundamental Lawyering Skill," published by the Legal Writing Journal of the Legal Writing Institute.  

Francis J. Mootz, professor of law, had the article "The Unbearable In-Betweeness of Law," included in "Reading Ricoeur through Law," E. Brennan, M. de Leeu, G.H. Taylor, eds.; Lexington Books, forthcoming 2020. His invited presentation at the Classical Rhetoric and Modern Law Symposium, "Corpus Linguistics and Vico's Lament: Against Vivisectional Jurisprudence," will be published in the UNLV Law Review. His invited presentation on "Cannabis Insurance" at the Marijuana Law Symposium will be published in the Lewis and Clark Law Review.

Preeti Oza, assistant professor of physical therapy, co-authored the article "Sustained submaximal contraction yields selective modulation of soleus muscle presynaptic inhibition," published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, March 20.

Presentations and artistic activity

Alan Lenzi, professor of religious studies, presented the paper "Narrating for Nabu: An Assyrian Prayer (STT69) to the Scribal God as Persuasion" at the international symposium "Problems Defining Prayer in Antiquity" at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Aprill 11–12. From April 13 to 20, he was a visiting scholar at Northeast Normal University's Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations in Changchun, China. His three public lectures on Babylonian wisdom literature were "Counsels of Wisdom: Wisdom for the Professional," "Ludlul Bel Nemeqi: Wisdom for the Sufferer" and "Epic of Gilgamesh: Wisdom for the Mortal."   

Traci Roberts-Camps, professor and chair of modern languages and literature, gave an invited lecture on "Behind the Camera: Latin American Women Filmmakers," at University of San Diego co-sponsored by the Program in Latin American Studies, Film Studies and Gender Studies on April 2, 2019.  

Chemistry faculty and students presented research at the American Chemical Society's 257th ACS National Meetings and& Exposition held in Orlando, Florida, March 31–April 4. and attended by over 10,000 researchers from the U.S. and abroad:  

• Chao Feng '19, Yingbo Huang '19, and Andreas Franz, professor of chemistry, Xin Guo, professor of pharmaceutics and medicinal chemistry, and Qinliang Zhao, associate professor of chemistry, presented their co-authored poster "Design, Synthesis, and Biostudy of Bifunctional Platinum Complexes: Anti-cancer activity through DNA Binding and HDAC Inhibition."  
• Dan Shao '20, Chao Feng '19, and Qinliang Zhao, associate professor of chemistry, presented their co-authored poster "Synthesis, Characterization and Reactivities of New HDAC Inhibitors."  
• Liang Xue, associate professor of chemistry, presented the poster "Implementation of nucleic acid chemistry in undergraduate teaching and research." This presentation was sponsored by the Chemistry Collaborations, Workshops and Communities of Scholars program travel award.  

Conservatory of Music

Ann Miller, program director for strings and associate professor of violin, performed Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major as a guest artist with the Mariposa Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, April 6, in the Fiester Auditorium of Mariposa High School, and in Yosemite National Park on Sunday, April 7.  

McGeorge School of Law

Franklin Gevurtz, distinguished professor of law, will present his article "The Shareholder Approval Conundrum," at the National Business Law Scholars Conference at UC Berkeley School of Law, June 20-21.  

Leslie Gielow Jacobs, professor of law and director of the Capital Center for Law and Policy, presented as a panelist at the Brooklyn Law School Symposium, "Incitement at 100—And 50—And Today: Free Speech and Violence in the Modern World" on Feb. 12.   

Stephen McCaffrey, distinguished professor of law, has been invited to give a special course on "The Evolution of the Law of International Watercourses" in the Hague Academy of International Law's 2020 Summer Courses on Public International Law.  

Francis J. Mootz III, professor of law, presented on the ethical obligations of cannabis lawyering in California at the Annual Appellate Attorneys Institute in Redwood City on April 14.  

Michael Vitiello, distinguished professor of law, presented a paper on Miranda in the annual Texas Tech Criminal Law Symposium on March 29. The paper will be published in the Texas Tech Law Review.

Several faculty members presented research at the 2019 California Speech-Language-Hearing Association Annual Convention and Exhibition, March 14–17, 2019 in Pasadena, California:

• Larry Boles, graduate director and professor of speech-language pathology, presented "Aphasia Couples Therapy (ACT) Using Narrative Discourse."
• Jill Duthie, associate professor of speech-language pathology, and Nicholaus Brock '11, '12, assistant clinical professor of speech-language pathology and director of the Stockton Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Center, were co-presenters of "When You Pick up a Pen, You Stop the Interaction."
• Michael Susca, associate professor of speech-language pathology, presented "Time Pressure Effects in People Who Do and Do Not Stutter."
• Jeannene M. Ward-Lonergan, professor and department chair of speech-language pathology, co-presented "Let's Collaborate - CSHA's Inter-Professional Relationships with National and State Related Organizations!"
• Jeannene M. Ward-Lonergan and Jill Duthie co-presented "State of Dyslexia: Recent Legislation and Guidelines for Serving Students with Dyslexia."  

Gerald Griffin '71, adjunct faculty in pharmacy practice, presented "Autologous white blood cell infusion for trauma, brain trauma, stroke and select immune dysfunction co-morbidities" at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., Feb. 14–17, 2019. His presentation was based on the paper he co-authored by the same name, which was published in Medical Hypothesis, August 2018.
