“Justice Kennedy played an unexpectedly pivotal role at the Supreme Court,” Valliant News, Nov. 4, 2019: Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law was mentioned in this story about retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. In a paragraph about his ties to Sacramento, the story reads: “Kennedy and his wife, Mary — a former teacher at Sacramento’s Golden Empire Elementary School — have retained at least some connections to their hometown. For years, Kennedy has taught a three-week class in Salzburg, Austria, sponsored by the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law, where he first began teaching in 1965.”

“More San Joaquin County students staying in class,” The Record, Oct. 30, 2019: Lisa Douglass, Pacific’s community engagement manager, was quoted in this front-page story about the Beyond Our Gates Every Day Counts Attendance challenge. The story highlights that Pacific and its community partners have nearly doubled the number of San Joaquin students staying in school and, therefore, learning. “I have been so impressed by the level of commitment by educational professionals in San Joaquin County,” Douglass told the Record. “We still have a long way to go but it’s getting better. It really is helping change the culture as to how everybody views going to school.”

“‘Like a tornado of music’: Audience in for wild ride at Pacific Opera Follies,” The Record, Oct. 30, 2019: The Conservatory’s James Haffner and student Jorge Torrez were quoted in this story about the Opera Follies. “The most powerful response I’ve received so far from the audience over the years is the idea that someone is singing right next to you while you are sitting at your table,” Torrez told The Record. “I’ve had people say, ‘It is so refreshing and exciting to hear live singing right of front of me.’ We’ve lost that as a society. There is a bit more separation, but to be in a salon setting, some of the audience has very strong responses.”

“Hawaii Healthcare Heroes: Merv Lum,” KGMB (CBS, Honolulu, Hawaii), Oct. 29, 2019: Pharmacy alumnus Merv Lum and his 40-year career were highlighted in this feature. The story includes a woman who said she had “miraculous healing” because of Lum’s help.

“Another day, another lesson for insurers in evolving cannabis market,” BusinessInsurance.com, Oct. 29, 2019: McGeorge’s Francis J. Mootz III was quoted in this online story. Insurance coverage for the cannabis market is still evolving and beyond existing forms and insurance policy language. “Standard policies don’t work very well at all with cannabis,” he told the outlet.

“Health fair, help with selecting Medicare plans set for Nov. 9,” Manteca/Ripon Bulletin, Oct. 30, 2019: Raj Patel and student-pharmacists were mentioned in this short story about an upcoming Medicare Part D clinic. A portion of the story reads: “Dr. Rajul A. Patel will be there with a large team of students from the University of the Pacific’s Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. They’ll put together a no-cost health screening and help seniors navigate the many options Medicare has to offer.” The story was also carried by the Bulletin’s sister paper, The Ceres Courier.

“As NCAA Men’s Water Polo Season Goes into Conference Play, CWPA Top 20 Holds Steady,” SwimmingWorldMagazine.com, Nov. 1, 2019: James Graham and the men’s water polo team are No. 3 in the nation and mentioned in this story breaking down the coming conference games. The story reads in part: “This is a revenge game for Head Coach  James Graham’s team; LBS is ranked sixth in the nation, reigning conference champs and upset Pacific in last year’s GCC title match. For Graham, there’s also the calculation of qualifying for NCAAs outside of conference play and what it will take to earn an at-large berth. As hosts of the 2019 national championship, it’s a tremendous opportunity for his Tigers—but also comes with great pressure. “The definitive top 10 ranking of greatest Toronto Raptors of all-time,” NBA.com, Nov. 1, 2019: Pacific wasn’t mentioned in this story, but men’s basketball coach Damon Stoudamire comes in at No. 5 on this list. “While his time with the Raptors was short,” reads a portion of the story, “Damon Stoudamire’s impact was monumental to the beginning stages of the franchise. … Mighty Mouse kept fans coming back to the then Skydome as the team finished top 10 in attendance in the team's first two seasons. A large part of the country was just beginning to appreciate the game of basketball and Stoudamire was the one to get them through the door.”
