Pacific to reclassify part-time/adjunct faculty

Pacific to reclassify part-time/adjunct faculty

Beginning this fall, University of the Pacific will reclassify quarterly and semester part-time/adjunct faculty to non-exempt employees from exempt employees. This change is in alignment with the employment practices of peer universities in California. An employee’s classification as exempt or non-exempt does not change their value to the university, nor does it reflect on their professionalism, expertise or years of experience. The change reflects alignment with state and federal law.

Employees are classified as either non-exempt or exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act and corresponding state regulations. Employees classified as non-exempt are paid by the hour. Part-time/adjunct faculty who will be classified as non-exempt employees will begin to record their hours worked using Pacific’s web-time entry system found on insidePacific. Online training will be made available over the summer to provide instruction on how to use Pacific’s web-time entry system. All time spent teaching, preparing, grading and holding office hours constitutes hours worked and will continue to be compensable time.
