Ione (Angwin) Monagan '45 passed away Nov. 19 at age 95. Mrs. Monagan graduated with honors in 1945 from College of the Pacific with a bachelor's degree in communication. She set a new bar for women in student leadership as the first woman to serve as president of the Associated Students of University of the Pacific (ASuop) and was active as a student in Delta Gamma sorority.
She met her husband of more than 64 years, Robert T. "Bob" Monagan '42, at Pacific. The couple was married in 1945. Ione and Bob continued to be active supporters of Pacific after graduation. Bob served on the Board of Regents from 1991 to 2007, including as its president, on the National Commission. He also was president of the Alumni Association (1965-66) and a member of the Alumni House campaign committee, among other activities. Ione served on the board of the Alumni Association and the Jacoby Center Advisory Board. She and her husband were Half-Century Club procession leaders during the 2003 Commencement ceremony.
A new residence hall on the north campus was named Monagan Hall in honor of the Monagans in 2001.
Ione was preceded in death by husband Bob and daughter Kathleen. She is survived by son Michael Monagan, daughter Marilee Monagan, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family has requested that memorial gifts be designated to the Robert T. and Ione Angwin Monagan Endowed Scholarship at University of the Pacific, which is used to support women undergraduate students involved in student government or other activities demonstrating strong leadership capabilities.
