Quote of the Week

"To this day, I am forever thankful for (voice professor Burr Phillips) and I’m in awe at how much he inspires me as a musician."

Jorge Torrez, VoicesofMontereyBay.org, June 27, 2019

Examples of how University of the Pacific was represented in the news media in recent days:

"Justice Anthony Kennedy's LGBTQ Civil Rights Legacy," Capital Public Radio's "Insight with Beth Ruyak," June 27, 2019: McGeorge's Larry Levine and John Cary Sims discussed former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and his writing of the decision granting marriage equality in all 50 states. "I think (Justice Kennedy) is animated by an equality principle," Levine told "Insight." "And on First Amendment cases, I think he may be the closest thing to a First Amendment purist on the court." "Starting with Romer (v. Evans in 1996), and going all the way through the other cases, he has really penetrated to the reality of life: that relationships are important to us; that we're all looking for love; we sometimes find it, we sometimes don't," Sims told "Insight." "And that to deny that aspect of life to any group within the population is fundamentally unfair."

"Not our fathers' Gregorian chant: Music in the Mountains presents Orff's 'Carmina Burana'," The Union (Grass Valley), June 27, 2019: Conservatory's Dan Ebbers was quoted in this story about a performance of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana," verses written in Old Latin set to music. Ebbers was the tenor soloist singing "The Roasted Swan" and told The Union, "I would even go so far as to say that most tenors do not sing this piece as much as navigate it. It awkwardly goes through registers in the voice that are difficult to steer through, especially when the pitches are higher. I think Orff intended it that way. It is obvious when you consider how he writes so beautifully for the other two soloists. In the tenor solo, however, it is supposed to sound like someone is suffering. But any tenor who sings this role will tell you that both the swan and the tenor are suffering."

"Perfectly in Tune: Salinas native Jorge Torrez travels the world as a classical vocal performer," VoicesofMontereyBay.org, June 27, 2019: Conservatory vocal performance student Jorge Torrez was featured in this story on his summer plans to sing for the Cabrillo College Traveling Choir in South Africa before going to Germany for singing workshops and more performances. "To this day, I am forever thankful for this man and I'm in awe at how much he inspires me as a musician," Torrez said of voice professor Burr C. Phillips.

"Am I too old for braces?," Active Family Magazine, July 1, 2019: Dante Gonzales, a graduate of the "world class orthodontic training" at Dugoni, authored this piece for the Bay Area-based family magazine. His bio at the bottom of the piece covers his Dugoni experience.

"Markus Wine: A step above Red Wine Blends," The Written Palette, July 1, 2019: This feature on Lodi winemaker and vintner Markus Niggli mentions Pacific students creating labels for his wine. A portion of the blog entry reads, "He thinks outside the box. This fact is not only true of his wines but also of the labels that represent each wine. Markus works with Michael Leonard and his students at the University of the Pacific in Stockton to design his labels. The imagery is about people, travel, and the places that impact us, and in this case, those that played a significant part in Markus' life. They are a collaboration and expressions that bring together his past career in travel with his current winemaking."

"Two local golfers, best pals, play in U.S. Senior Open: Jeff Wilson, Jeff Brehaut have been buddies since college," Vallejo Times Herald, June 26, 2019: Alumni Jeff Wilson and Jeff Brehaut were featured in this sports story. The best friends, who met as students at Pacific, were playing in the U.S. Senior Open at University of Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course.
