McGeorge Summer Salzburg Program adds undergraduate pre-law program

Mar 5, 2019

United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy (Ret.) will teach for his 29th year in the McGeorge summer program in Salzburg, Austria. This year undergraduate students will have the opportunity to enroll in a new pre-law program for the first time.

The unique pre-law summer program provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to study abroad and take a special course not available through any other institution or program. In the "Comparative Legal Systems: Focus on Human Rights" course, undergraduates will spend time in a 16th-century classroom learning from noted scholars, including guest lecturer Justice Kennedy (Ret.). The programs for both undergraduate and graduate law students run from July 1 to July 20, 2019, with a pre-program international internship course option for graduate students running May 20 to June 28.

McGeorge will place students who are enrolled in the European Law in Practice course in six-week internships anywhere in Europe. The three-week graduate academic program in Salzburg offers international and comparative law courses in public and commercial law fields to law students who want to expand their understanding of international issues that increasingly impact legal practice everywhere.

Law students who register for the McGeorge Salzburg Summer Program will have the distinctive opportunity to take "Freedom of Expression in Europe and the U.S.," a course that is co-taught by Justice Kennedy and Professor Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, Anniversary Chair in Law and co-director of the Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context at Queen Mary University of London. Justice Kennedy was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Reagan in 1988 and served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit starting in 1975. Prior to his elevation to the bench, he practiced law in Sacramento, and, beginning in 1965, taught Constitutional Law as a member of the McGeorge faculty. He retired from the U.S. Supreme Court in July 2018.

"Corporate Governance and Human Rights" will be taught by Professor Peter Winship from the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, and Professor Patrick Warto from the University of Salzburg Faculty of Law. McGeorge School of Law's Clémence Kucera will teach "European Law in Practice." "Democracy and the Rule of Law" will be taught by Dr. Wolfgang Brandstetter, judge on the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Austria, special advisor to the Commissioner of Justice of the European Union, and professor of criminal law at Vienna University of Economics and Business Administrations.

McGeorge hosted the event "Justices on Justice," a comparative constitutionalism discussion, on Oct. 15, 2018, featuring Judge Brandstetter, Justice Kennedy (Ret.), Presiding Judge Ann Power-Forde of Constitutional Court Chamber of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSC) in The Hague, and former Justice Joseph Grodin of the California Supreme Court. available to view on the McGeorge YouTube channel.

Classes are held in the Law Faculty building of the University of Salzburg, located in a renovated 16th-century palace in the heart of Salzburg's historic old town. Salzburg has been the site of the McGeorge's annual summer program on International Legal Studies since 1974. In addition to law students and graduates from the United States, the program also enrolls a substantial number of students from other countries.

Registration is open until March 15, 2019, for the graduate law programs, and registration is April 30, 2019, for the undergraduate pre-law program.
