Session 1

Session 2

Ceramics Studio

Creating with Clay

Work with faculty from the Department of Art, Media, Performance and Design to create pottery and sculptures out of clay. Students will learn wheel throwing, hand building, and other techniques. They will also take part in a kiln firing. This will be a hands-on tactile creative studio experience in the most inspirational art facility in the region.

Curriculum

Our dynamic curriculum will introduce you to the world of ceramics using Pacific’s high-fired kilns, throwing wheels and hand-building studio. This program will challenge you to make a small portfolio of work within two weeks, from sculpting to throwing, glazing and firing. You’ll leave this program being able to confidently work your way around a ceramics studio all the while drinking a refreshing summer drink from the well-crafted ceramic vessel that you made.

Planned Topics

In the morning, you will be observing techniques and methods of ceramics materials through demonstrations, researching the context of historical and contemporary clay works related to your designs and discussing design schemes as a group for open studio hours.

In the afternoons, you will have the chance to work in the ceramics studio, supervised by studio assistance, taking part in making your own vessels and forms. By the end of your time, you will be helping to fire the large gas kiln for an exciting kiln opening.

On completion of the program, each student will advance their understanding of the field of ceramics and develop material skills and artistic design principles that will equip them for a successful application to colleges and universities.
