Musical Theatre Workshop and Showcase

The Musical Theatre Intensive will provide students with an opportunity to train intensively in the musical theatre arts with curriculum components that address the unique demand of synthesizing singing, acting and dancing. Acting lessons, dance technique and individual voice/coaching instruction will be at the core of the two-week intensive. Participants will perform two different events: a Standards Cabaret, featuring music of the American Songbook, and a Finale Showcase, featuring the culmination of the program's work.

The musical theatre program is intended for students who sing in their school choir and/or musical theatre ensemble and are interested in singing musical theatre repertoire at the Summer High School Institute. Students in the musical theatre program often collaborate with students in our choir program.

Curriculum

Participants will be able to demonstrate:

  1. Strong, clear acting choices both in ensemble and solo work
  2. A working understanding of basic dance techniques
  3. The application of appropriate musical stylistic choices in ensemble and solo repertoire
  4. A foundational understanding of healthy vocal production
  5. Synthesis of dance, drama and music into a complete performance

Participants will learn fundamental acting techniques in group sessions and then apply this training to both ensemble and solo performances. Daily dance technique lessons will be included to introduce and enhance movement skills. All participants will be given individual voice lessons and coaching sessions. Individual acting coaching will take place in preparation for the Standards Cabaret as well as group rehearsals for the Finale Showcase.
