40th Annual Charles A. Sweet, Sr. Pediatric Dentistry Memorial Lecture
09:00 a.m. - 04:00 p.m.
Oral Surgery and Diagnosis of Pathology from the Primary to Permanent Dentition
This lecture is designed to elevate pediatric dentists’ skills in diagnosis, treatment planning and surgical procedures. A review of basic pediatric oral surgery will reinforce the fundamental principles and essential armamentarium needed to ensure predictable and efficient surgical care in children. This presentation will equip dental professionals with best practices for radiographic examinations to support timely diagnosis of pathology and informed treatment options. Through minor instrument updates, practical technique tips and detailed case reviews, clinicians will gain increased confidence and clinical efficiency in delivering productive, effective surgical care. A focused review of pathology will support more accurate radiographic interpretation to ensure timely diagnosis and intervention.
You Will Learn
- To utilize less commonly used forceps that support predictable and efficient extraction outcomes
- To examine best practices for determining the appropriate type and frequency of radiographic imaging
Fundamentals of Basic Appliance Therapy in Children: Simple Treatment Rendering Great Results
This session will outline the key principles for successful placement of fixed chairside space maintainers, along with established protocols for follow-up and timely removal. Dr. Johnson will discuss several simple interceptive appliances designed to support the dental development of growing children. An emphasis will be placed on limited appliance care for patients with special needs who may not be candidates for conventional orthodontics. Relevant case studies will be reviewed to illustrate clinical application. Participants will also explore simple yet powerful techniques to improve outcomes with chairside unilateral fixed space maintainers and will learn to deliver retentive, predictable and time-efficient space maintenance by integrating minor adaptations. A comprehensive overview of basic pediatric appliances will be provided, along with a decision-making tree to guide optimal appliance selection and follow-up protocols.
You Will Learn
- To identify best practices for the placement, follow-up and removal of fixed unilateral chairside space maintainers
- To understand proactive serial extraction and appliance management for patients who are not candidates for future orthodontic treatment due to special needs, oral hygiene challenges, limited access to care, etc.
- How to assess candidates for molar substitution in cases of hypomineralized first permanent molars, with consideration of optimal timing and appropriate molar selection for extraction
