Working in the mailroom at University of the Pacific is a labor of love for Joy Hart—so much so that she has done it for 45 years.

“I love my job and I love the people,” Hart said. “They all are so special.”

Hart was one of two employees with 45 years honored at luncheons on the Stockton (May 1) and Sacramento campuses (April 25). The San Francisco Campus will have a years of service celebration on June 18.

The annual events honor milestone work anniversaries for faculty and staff in increments of five years. Recipients of the annual Cavanaugh, Staff Champion of DEI and Podesto awards also were announced.

Chief Financial Officer James Walsh (left) recognized Joy Hart (right) and Joseph Alward (not pictured) for 45 years of service to Pacific.

Hart was surrounded by colleagues at the Stockton luncheon. Lynne Madewell, mailroom manager for the Stockton and Sacramento campuses, shared her praise.

“Simply put, she is her name. Joy is a joy,” Madewell said. “She shares her warmth every day on the job.”

Hart has a unique job in the mailroom. She manages the shredding.

“We cannot keep up with her,” Madewell laughed. “She just powers right through things. She is one of the hardest workers I have ever been around.”

Joseph Alward of College of the Pacific is the other Pacific employee honored for 45 years.

Alward, whose academic specialty is solid-state physics, teaches more than 200 students each year in the introductory physics sequence and physics for non-majors. Students consistently praise Alward for his commitment to their academic success.

He is known for providing an encouraging, supportive environment that fosters positive student outcomes.
