Honoring 28 years of shaping future pharmacists
For over a quarter of a century, Yong S.K. Moon, PharmD, associate professor of pharmacy practice and regional coordinator for LA/Long Beach, has been serving U.S. veterans at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Since 1998, Dr. Moon has also guided third-year doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) students through the critical final stage of their education before they become pharmacists. As she prepares to retire in June, she reflects on her time at Pacific.
“One of the most rewarding aspects has been mentoring students and watching them grow into amazing professionals and leaders in their fields,” said Dr. Moon. “Seeing their success and knowing I played a part in their journeys has been incredibly fulfilling.”
Her goal for every student in her region has been to empower them to become “the best pharmacist they can be.” Dr. Moon tailors her approach to each student’s unique needs and situation.
“It depends on what they need at the moment, whether it’s career development advice, help with residency or fellowship applications, job hunting tips, professionalism guidance, managing rotation performance or even emotional support,” she shared.
At the heart of her experience has been the people she has worked alongside. The sense of community and camaraderie have been a steady source of motivation.
“I have been fortunate to work alongside incredibly talented and dedicated colleagues who made every day inspiring,” she said.
Dr. Moon’s efforts have been instrumental in establishing partnership with numerous health care systems throughout Los Angeles County. By developing robust experiential rotation opportunities, she has helped provide Pacific students with invaluable real-world experience, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice.
“Under Dr. Moon’s leadership, and despite intense competition among 10 schools in Southern California, the LA/Long Beach region has consistently remained a highly sought-after Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience region for our students,” said Allen Shek, PharmD, professor of pharmacy practice and associate dean of professional programs. “The number of practitioners, leaders and preceptors who have been mentored by Dr. Moon is truly remarkable.”
Her achievements, whether they involve patient care or student success, reflect Dr. Moon’s commitment to making a positive impact. In recognition of her tireless efforts, she was selected by the PharmD Class of 2023 as the Regional Coordinator of the Year.
As she nears retirement, she looks forward to having more time for new adventures, meaningful travel and cherished time with friends and family, including her two daughters. She plans to prioritize self-care through meditating, practicing yoga and hiking. She is also eager to dive into her creative pursuits, painting and quilting, and has challenged herself to learn a musical instrument for the first time.
