For nearly two decades, water polo shaped Alex Obert’s life—from an All-American student-athlete at University of the Pacific to a three-time Olympian representing the United States on the sport's biggest stage. Now, as he closes one chapter of an extraordinary career, he's helping shape the future of the program where it all began.

Obert, an engineering graduate, was honored in a retirement celebration Friday night as the USA Men’s National Team hosted an exhibition match against Italy at the Douglass M. Eberhardt Aquatics Center. The evening not only celebrated his accomplishments in the pool but also highlighted his continued commitment to Pacific.

Last summer, he was appointed the first-ever men’s water polo general manager at Pacific, a newly created position designed to bolster the team’s recruiting efforts, including events similar to Friday’s festivities.

“Celebrating a long, important chapter of my life, I couldn’t have done it at a better place than at Pacific where it all rocketed off,” Obert said. “It was exciting to see some of the guys that I played in the Olympics with and drop in the pool one last time.”

The Team USA veteran most recently captured a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, adding to his previous performances in the 2020 Tokyo and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“Any time you get a high-level game like USA vs. Italy in this area, being able to showcase what is the peak of the sport is an awesome opportunity for the Valley,” Obert said. “Pacific is right there to help make it possible.”

Head Coach James Graham, who coached Obert from 2011 to 2015, said Obert’s impact extends far beyond his accomplishments in the pool.

“Celebrating Alex and all that he has accomplished at Pacific and on the international stage is a special moment for our program,” Graham said. “Alex has been a cornerstone of the Pacific water polo community, not only as an exceptional player, but also as our general manager. Alex embodies what is possible through hard work, commitment and belief in your goals. His journey is a testament to the idea that you can come to Pacific, dream big and achieve the highest levels of success in our sport.”

Obert ranks among the most accomplished players to compete in the pool for the Tigers. As a senior at Pacific in 2015, he was a finalist for the Peter J. Cutino Award, which is presented annually to the top men’s water polo player in the country. He earned All-American honors in 2013 and helped lead the Tigers to the NCAA championship match after victories over Stanford in the national semifinals and UCLA in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship.

Reflecting on his career, Obert said the sport has given him far more than athletic achievements.

“Water polo has really taken me everywhere,” he said. “Coming to Pacific and meeting my wife, Michele, to playing at the Olympic level and a national championship game. Twenty years of water polo being at the center of my life and I’m forever grateful for what the sport has given me. I will never be able to give back what it has given me. It has an been an unbelievable journey.”

Obert also credited his family and friends for supporting him throughout his career.

“I’m so happy that the university and the athletic department was able to step up and help host the event. I’m grateful for all my supporters, especially my family throughout this journey.”

Obert will continue to be a pillar within the water polo community. As he transitions from Olympian to mentor, he remains focused on inspiring the next generation of Tigers.
