Pacific hosts annual math competition for area fifth graders

fifth grade students participate in Math Steeplechase

What: More than a thousand fifth graders will join University of the Pacific for the 18th annual Math Steeplechase, an engaging day of science experiments, athletic challenges and a math-a-thon competition. 

Students will start the day with welcoming remarks from university leaders, then break into groups to rotate between activities in three locations across campus. New this year, as part of Pacific’s partnership with the San Francisco 49ers, staff members from the 49ers Foundation will facilitate a science experiment on the Wendell Phillips Center Lawn.

The event is designed to help students improve their critical thinking, communication and math skills and is hosted by Pacific’s Benerd College, the Department of Mathematics and Pacific Athletics. 

Thirteen elementary schools from across the northern Central Valley will be participating.

When: Thursday, April 23

8:30-9:30 a.m. — opening remarks 

9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — students rotate through stations

12:30-1 p.m. — lunch

1:30-2 p.m. — winner announced

Where: University of the Pacific, Stockton, California

The event will start at the Alex G. Spanos Center, then rotate between the Spanos Center, Wendell Phillips Center lawn and field hockey field. (see campus map)
