University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law has raised $120,000 to launch a new McGeorge Double Tiger Scholarship supporting law students with financial need, who have previously earned an undergraduate degree from University of the Pacific.

A “Double Tiger” is a Pacific alumnus who has earned two degrees from the university. Most commonly, that means completing an undergraduate degree at Pacific and later returning for a graduate or professional degree.

The scholarship is intended to support students who continue their education within the Pacific community, the scholarship also gives preference to students in the Pacific Legal Advantage Program, a pre-law program that supports Pacific undergraduates who are preparing for law school and encourages them to continue their education within the university system.

Andres Mayorga ‘25 ‘27, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) student and Double Tiger, said continuing his education at Pacific felt like a natural step.

“Being able to continue my education here, in my hometown, with the institution that I work at, have previously gotten my education at that I love, was just kind of a natural next step, and it's been great so far,” Mayorga said.

The scholarship was pioneered by several Double Tiger alumni, and the effort was led in part by alumni seeking to formalize long-standing support amongst Pacific graduates.

“The [McGeorge] Double Tiger Scholarship reflects my passion for a Pacific education,” said Janice Magdich ’79 ’96, one of the donors behind the initiative.

Magdich said her experience at Pacific and McGeorge had a lasting impact on both her career and personal growth.

“I loved my time at Pacific and McGeorge and believe that my education has been invaluable to shaping my professional career and who I am as a person,” Magdich said. “Contributing to McGeorge is my way of sharing that opportunity with others.”

Magdich said she hopes the scholarship will help ease financial barriers for future students who follow a similar path from Pacific undergraduate programs into law school.

Kathryn Tobias ‘72 ‘73 ‘87 is also among the alumni who contributed to the scholarship’s creation.

“I believe in giving back,” Tobias said. “I was lucky to live in Sacramento, where there was a great law school in my backyard when I decided to go back to law school in my 30s. I’ve never regretted it.”

Tobias said she hopes this scholarship encourages students to come to McGeorge.

Magdich and Tobias are challenging alumni to give 50 gifts during Pacific Gives, University of the Pacific’s annual day of giving is scheduled for April 21-22. If the challenge is completed, they will donate an additional $10,000 to the scholarship. Pacific Gives is the perfect opportunity for alumni, students and supporters to contribute to the McGeorge Double Tiger Scholarship and help grow the endowment.
