Empowering young minds through the joy of reading

The Book Buddies Program is a reading mentorship program designed to support and guide the next generation by fostering an appreciation for books and literacy. Elementary school students from Kindergarten-fourth grade are paired with student mentors from Benerd College who meet with the students one-on-one each week to read and engage in literacy based activities.

About the Program

Students from area elementary schools in grades Kindergarten-fourth grade are paired with student mentors from Benerd College to meet one-on-one each week throughout the semester. The mentors will read and engage with students in literacy-based activities designed to develop reading comprehension. Some of these activities include drawing, using graphic organizers, making vocabulary flashcards, and various storytelling techniques.

In 1998, Benerd College at took over stewardship of the program. Since Fall 2006, the Book Buddies Program has been endowed by Kristy and Steve Goulart, with a mission to expand outreach efforts to serve more children in the community.
