Alumna advances patient care through treasurer role
Wendy Gibbons ’97, PharmD, LSSGB has a knack for managing resources. The skills she honed by volunteering with local nonprofit organizations in San Diego are now being applied to her position as treasurer of the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP).
Dr. Gibbons first engaged with CSHP as a doctor of pharmacy student at Pacific and has been a member throughout her career. Her classmate, Stacey Raff ’96, PharmD, BCPS, who served as CSHP president in 2015, inspired her to become a more active member.
“CSHP has had a significant impact on my career by providing mentorship, leadership development and opportunities to collaborate with pharmacists across a wide range of practice settings,” said Dr. Gibbons. “I’ve built lasting professional relationships and gained experiences that have directly shaped my growth as a clinician and leader.”
Her goal as treasurer is to “ensure the organization’s financial strategy directly supports its mission of advancing pharmacy practice and improving patient outcomes. That includes prioritizing investments in advocacy, education, leadership development and innovation, while maintaining strong financial oversight and transparency.”
Two of the organization’s key priorities, geriatrics and emerging artificial intelligence technologies, align with Dr. Gibbon’s areas of interest and help ensure pharmacists are well-prepared to meet the evolving needs of patients across California. Dr. Gibbons has contributed to these initiatives through her involvement in the development of the Geriatric Certificate Program and by serving on CSHP’s AI Council.
“In geriatrics, there will be a growing emphasis on comprehensive medication management, deprescribing and interdisciplinary care models to address the complex needs of aging populations,” she said. “Technology, AI and advanced clinical decision support, will enhance safety and efficiency while allowing pharmacists to spend more time on direct patient care.”
“Pacific played a foundational role in shaping both my clinical expertise and leadership philosophy. It fostered a strong culture of service, professionalism and engagement, which encouraged me to become actively involved in student organizations, including CSHP.”
Dr. Gibbons is a pharmacy manager at Edgemoor Distinct Part Skilled Nursing Facility, a long-term care facility which serves residents of San Diego County. She finds her role deeply rewarding and values the collegial, collaborative environment.
“We have 192 beds and it is primarily for people who cannot be placed at other facilities because they have high medical needs, in addition to, oftentimes, psychiatric needs,” she said. “We have an amazing team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care providers who work together to take care of the residents.”
A mother of four, she enjoys watching her children play competitive sports — from golf to field hockey. Her and her children also invest in their community by volunteering with local nonprofit organizations.
