Campus to reopen Nov 21 due to anticipated improvements in air quality

The university continues to monitor air quality, particularly the PM2.5 air quality index, for Sacramento, San Francisco and Stockton. Current air quality indexes can be found at airnow.gov.

Nov. 20, 11 a.m.

University of the Pacific continues to closely monitor air quality levels, especially as defined by large particulates (PM2.5). Based on forecasts of improving air quality, the Sacramento, San Francisco and Stockton campuses will reopen tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Employees should report to work as scheduled. Campus services will operate their hours scheduled for the Thanksgiving holiday week.

Thank you to all those who helped ensure essential services remained available during the campus closures.

University of the Pacific continues to closely monitor air quality levels, especially as defined by large particulates (PM2.5). Because the air quality is still unhealthy and not expected to improve, academic and administrative leadership have made the difficult decision to cancel classes and keep the Sacramento, San Francisco and Stockton campuses closed Monday, Nov. 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20. A decision about Wednesday will be made Tuesday afternoon.

All events and activities on all three campuses will be canceled, rescheduled or relocated for Monday, Nov. 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20. Essential services on this Stockton Campus will continue to operate during the hours published on the closure notification page.

Personnel responsible for essential functions as identified by supervisors should report to work Monday and Tuesday; all other employees are expected to work from home or another location. Employees will be paid regular wages for their scheduled hours.

University of the Pacific continues to closely monitor air quality levels, especially as defined by large particulates (PM2.5). With little change anticipated, the Sacramento, San Francisco and Stockton campuses will remain closed Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18.

All events on all three campuses have been canceled, rescheduled or relocated. On the Stockton Campus, the Janet Leigh Theatre will show its originally scheduled movie at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

A decision about Monday will be communicated Sunday afternoon.

Nov. 15, 3:45 p.m.

Due to air quality reaching the unhealthy level, the San Francisco Campus will close at 5 p.m. today and remain closed through tomorrow. Essential services including Public Safety will be available. Employees are asked to coordinate with their supervisors and to work from home or another location for tomorrow. Managers will determine employees in essential functions who may be asked to work on campus. Employees will be paid regular wages for today and tomorrow.

Nov. 15, 11:30 a.m.

The Sacramento Campus is closed today and will be closed Friday, Nov. 16, except for essential services. Essential services on the Sacramento Campus include the health center, which will be open Nov. 15, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The Stockton Campus is closed today at noon and will be closed Friday, Nov. 16, except for essential services. All classes, events, work and campus activities are canceled.

Due to the air quality index in Stockton, tonight's NCAA Tournament First Round matchup against UC Riverside will be moved to Fresno. The venue will be Fresno Pacific's Ramirez Field in a 7:30 start. Ticket prices will remain the same and Pacific students that make the trip will still be allowed in for free with a valid student ID.

The university will assess weekend events by 5 p.m., Fri., Nov. 16 and assess Monday, Nov. 19 events by 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18.

Faculty and staff are expected to work from home or another remote location today and will be paid. Non-exempt staff will be paid for their scheduled hours today and tomorrow. 

Nov. 14, 6:45 p.m.

The evening of Wednesday, Nov. 14 evening, air quality index numbers for Sacramento rose to above 200, which is into the “very unhealthy” range. In response to these conditions, the Sacramento Campus is closed Thursday, Nov. 15 and all classes are canceled. Only essential personnel are to report to work — they will be contacted by their supervisors. The health center on the Sacramento Campus will be open Nov. 15, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

On the San Francisco and Stockton campuses, classes are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15 and offices will be open and we will continue to closely monitor changing air quality conditions.

Nov. 13, 5:31 p.m.

The air quality in Stockton and San Francisco has been improving and is anticipated to continue to improve on Wednesday, Nov. 14. If students are unable to attend class on Wednesday, Nov. 14 because of health concerns due to air quality, they should contact their professors as soon as possible.

Nov. 12, 5:59 p.m.

Smoke from multiple wildfires in the region continues to cause high levels of air pollution throughout San Joaquin and Sacramento counties. The impact is variable and unpredictable. If students are unable to attend class on Tuesday, Nov. 13 because of health concerns due to air quality, they should contact their professors as soon as possible.

Nov. 12, 9:22 a.m.

With the ongoing wildfires in Northern California and the effects on air quality, we urge students to take care regarding their health and safety. If students are unable to attend class today, please contact your faculty member or instructor and let them know. Faculty will accommodate students who are absent because of health concerns due to air quality. Students on the Stockton campus can also contact Student Success Coaches at 209.946.2177 for additional support related to health concerns.

There are several resources on campus to assist students: Student Health Services, located in the Stockton Cowell Wellness Center and on the Sacramento campus, has medical staff available during business hours to provide consultation and evaluation.  They can be reached at 209.946.2315, ext. 1.

Free N95 particulate respirator masks that can protect from wildfire smoke will be available in Student Health Services and in the DeRosa University Center today on the Stockton campus. Students on the Sacramento campus can pick up masks in the Dining area.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff can provide face-to-face and virtual resources to students. CAPS can be reached during business hours, at 209.946.2315, ext. 2 or ext. 4 if after 5 p.m. CAPS is a 24-hour resource. On the Sacramento Campus, CAPS staff are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 2988 35th Street. Religious and Spiritual Life provides multi-faith religious and spiritual support to students.
