Hundreds of students make community connections at Pacific Day of Service
Student volunteers gave back to local organizations during Pacific's Day of Service.
From caring for animals at the Stockton Animal Shelter to planting trees at Stockton’s Sandman Park and supplying meal bags at the city’s Emergency Food Bank, more than 600 students, faculty, staff and alumni volunteered across San Joaquin County for University of the Pacific’s annual Day of Service, lending their time and energy to local organizations.
Pacific collaborated with 16 community organizations, providing meaningful support for local needs while helping new students experience the university's commitment to service, sustainability and community.
For many participants, the day offered more than an opportunity to volunteer. It was a chance to get involved, meet new people and form friendships while beginning to build meaningful connections.
“I wanted to gain experience in volunteering. I have never volunteered before aside from clubs. Volunteering is a good opportunity to give back, and I like helping people. It was great, but tiring. I had to work fast to keep up with everybody, but I enjoyed it," said first-year student Jacqueline Celias ’30.
The biological sciences major joined volunteers at the emergency food bank, helping to pack nearly 800 bags of nonperishable items. They also served nearly 400 people in the distribution line.
“Our Day of Service event centers on community involvement, social impact and campus-community bonding,” said Pacific Volunteer Center Specialist Jessica Serrano-Sotelo. “We want our students to feel connected to their new home over the next four or five years, but, most importantly, for everyone who participates to see themselves as ongoing partners and leaders in creating meaningful, positive change through their college experience and beyond.”
Earlier this year, Pacific received national recognition for its commitment to engaging with the community, earning the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.
