Renowned naturalist, explorer, writer, and conservationist, John Muir (1838-1914) is considered a forefather of the modern environmental movement. Several of Muir's descendants attended Pacific and 1970 entrusted the University of the Pacific with the naturalist’s journals and notebooks, correspondence, manuscript writings, drawings, and family and biographers’ papers—representing the largest collection of Muir’s works in the world.
